coolant leak

Guys need some help .

Took my mk1 on along run weekend seemed fine.

Started her up on sunday and water leaking specifically collant, looked like it was coming from behind the transmission fluid cooler, or oil cooler mounted to the side of the bell housing.

Mine is an auto MK1 1.8I

I couldn't see where the leak was coming from looked like the bell housing.

Scary,.

Anyway had been using a little water but has got worse.

Doesn't seem as bad when running. but when I stop, the leak gets worse. Losing about half a pint a time.

Never noticed any oil in the water or water in the oil etc.

The car seems to keep itself in the right tmperature range according to the temp guage.


Need help any advice ?

Hi Brisben,
good n ews is that there are no coolant welsh plugs behind the flywheel on the block.
Check around the head gasket area or the piece on the head bolted on above the bell housing as the "o" ring can and quite often does leak.

Check that water is not getting into the transmission oil. Look at the dipstick.

Cheers Andrew, Cannot see nay leaks from above the bell housing.

Really worried it might be the head gasket....Not sure how to check though !

Really need to find someone with a pressure tester. Take less than 5 minutes to diagnose it then mate. Head gaskets arent all that common to leak between the head and the block.
Must be someone on the forum up there with a cooling system pressure tester to fit a mk1.

Thanks Guys.

No Oil in the transmission fluid.

No water on the oil dipstick or oil filler cap.

It has dumped all the water from the expansion tank.

The piece of kit that has fluid going in and out on the side of the bellhousing, looking like a transmission oil cooler, or oil cooler.

However the leak is deffo coming from behind it.

No hoses seem to leak !!!!

Bizzzare, although I work 40k's from home, scared to drive it incase I blow the head gasket !

Could it be the water jacket / layer on the transmision cooler has a leak or hole in it ?

Mate I reckon the transmission cooler is knackered.

I do want to put it into a manual, but maybe just go the whole hog and put a 2l 16 valver in it.

What do you reckon ?

How much will it set me back with loom and all !
