    Coiovers for Mk1 Hardtop and Cabriolet, are they the same?

    Hi,
    Just wondering as there is a few for sale on here.
    I know that as standard the suspension on the cabby is harder due to weight, what about coilovers?
    (Hottuning or JOM for example.)

    Any info appreciated

    im not 100% on this, but i ordered HT coils for my cabby during its project, then i bought a 4 door mk1, i banged the coil-overs in that and compared to other mk1's on the same coil-overs, it was noticeably stiffer/bouncier so im pretty sure cabby coils have a stiffer spring rate, from experience

    Not sure, but I'd say that with Hottuning or JOM coil-overs (and other cheap brands/manufacturers) the weight difference between Cabrio's and Golf's would be negligible.

    What I mean is that they're obviously not full on track-spec coil-overs. Not for that price.

    I was thinking the same thing as the budget coils for sale on ebay say...Mk1 Golf, Cabriolet, Scirocco.

    It would be more important with conventional suspension. With coilovers you can set the height, with fixed springs there's no adjustment. Fitting too soft a spring would give you a drop you have no control over.

    you could try shooting Brisben a PM. his cabby is on coils i'm pretty sure. there's a few other dudes round here with cabbys on coils too. dubai gti maybe? they could at least give you insight into brands, ride etc.

    HotTuning list two sets of coilovers, one for MK1 and one for MK1 Cabriolet.
    Specs are pretty much the same though!

    No, I'm running lowered coils on std.(new) shocks, which are way too bumpy...coil-overs will be fitted one day when the price is right !!!

    If you're really serious, you'd need to contact the manufacturor, and ask them if they're different specs. I dont think the Hottuning/JOM would be different specs (infact I'd be surprised if they were), but top end ones I would expect to be even slightly different spring/or damper rates from each other, since a fully loaded cabby could weigh a fair bit more than a basic 2 door hardtop.

    *realistically, NOT heaps more, but defiantly different if you were pushing them up a hill!

    Thanks for the input guys.
    Looking at the hottuning site, the specs are exactly the same.
    The car just needs to be safe and low for a reasonable price, won't be pushing it up hills or racing round tracks just yet.
