    Coilovers For Mk1

    Hi guys,

Just an idea. I've been looking for some info on coilovers for a mk1 and i want to tap into the experience of this forum. There are dozens of threads with snippets of info on them but i thought it would be nice to compile it all into one useful thread.

Could anyone who has put coilovers on a mk1 please post up the brand, supplier, part number if possible, cost, and experience with each setup?

Please keep all chat for the general section... comments that are useless ruin informative threads

Come on guys we can do this. Lets make this forum a useful resource.

    Cheers

    Mike

    Copied over from another thread.

This was my setup in my mk1 gti

KW V3 coilover's - Unfreaken believable (Height, compression & rebound adjustable) I'd have to check for what I set everything at.
ABD 25mm hollow front swaybar kit
ABD 28mm hollow rear swaybar kit
Neuspeed front top & bottom stress bars
    Standard VW bushes
Standard 14x6" Pirelli P Slot wheels
    Toyo RA1 street/race tyres 205/55R14

Wheel alignment set with standard toe & -1 degree of camber.

This setup on the street for everyday use was way better than I could have imagined. Nearly rode as good as my brother's mk5 gti. Even he said that once he went for a ride. Only down side was with the front swaybar fitted, it would be alittle noisey when going slow due to the very hard bushes. But it's only a 5 minute job to remove or refit. Don't really need this on for street use.

On the track it was ballastic. Full stop. Didn't pitch, roll nothing. The KW's really come into there own on the track & stiffen right up when pushed.

Brought them from Dragan at Inmotive (02) 8812 5299

    Cost $2840 Delivered to Vic.

I'm using weitec XS from RSJ Parts on my mk1. They cost me around $1350 all up delivered.

Weitec are german and I'm not sure of their exact relationship with KW but there is KW branding all over them. I know that whereas KW will use stainless struts weitec will be cad-plated steel - thats where some of the difference in price comes from.

They are pretty firm on the road, mind you I have them on the middle setting, but out on the track I was very impressed. The car turned in beautifully, always felt really settled and I have finally rid myself of the scary, unsettling pitch I was getting on sudden back-off after boosting it up.

At less than half the price of a similarly adjustable KW I'm happy (although I have never tried KWs). They are better than anything I have tried so far and I have used koni adjustables before. It handled a lot better than that typhoon boat in front of me!

In my 4 door i had Koni adjustable coilovers in the front and just lowered (and stiffer springs in the back.

It rode as hard as hell but was amazing through corners!

it didn't have that nasty kick back when the rear went out either.

these are about $1500 i think for a full set...not sure about just 2.

    hope this helps.

i had all-round H&R coil-overs on my mk1 with a lower front strut brace when i had it, it was the more expensive option at $2950 $3300 fitted and setup. but it was amazing, very controllable even when you loose control. wasn't to bad for the street either not to harsh, would reccomened straightening your front strut towers to.

I run the hottuning coil overs aswell after having 3 blown shocks i needed something quick i find them really good for the street not to hard very cruisey and you can thought it around abit i don't think there up to the challenge of alot of circuit work maybe be a bit soft and not sure how long the shocks will last being the cheaper option over somethings like the KWs

but the bonus of the hottunings are the changeable inserts though something like a koni insert and you should be on the money
