    Coilover Clearances

Hey guys just put a cheap set of coilovers (hot tuning ebay ones) in my mk1 golf, has anyone else has issues with clearance? My inner tyre rubs on the coilover now, im running the standard wheels with 185/65's.

Think i few people have, does it rub on the body of the coilover or the adjusting part?

Just put some superlites on, you know you want to

Yeh happened to me. I took out the helper spring to give the tyre some clearance. It sits low enough. Any lower and I would have to use some spacers I reckon.

it can vary depending on what wheel/tyre combo you run I guess. If its only a slight rubbing just get a small 3mm spacer in there or something.

It hits the base of the helper spring. How would the coilover be effected if I took the spring out? For now I'll just use a little 3mm spacer but I wanted to run 15x8 ET25 on the fronts but the rim would be clean through the coilover i reckon?

what are your current wheel specs? You can calculate how much clearance difference there will be.

Just standard 13x5 ET35. I need to get under the car and do some measurements it's not the rim that hits it's the tyre, since their 185's their a slight buldge so I might have a little room?

ET25 on an 15x8 will clear, but you'll have to be vary careful how much camber you run, and wont be able to run a tyre bigger than a 195/50.

with mk 3 steelies, the offset of the steelies is fine, it's just the large tyre that rubs, hence needing a spacer. Neg camber will also have a big impact on the tyre/rim to coilover clearance You could run a smaller tyre on a mk 3 steelie, and it'd be fine (not sure why you would though)

For now, I'd suggest a 5mm spacer and take some of that camber out. if it still rubs, remove the helper spring.

I was hoping ET25 on a 15x8 would clear. At the moment I've got the camber set to zero, just need a little spacer for now, even a 175 will clear but my 185's are basically brand new.
