    Clutch question

    Hey all,

Well, i got my 1980 MK1 registered today, and had a ball driving it, though I noticed the clutch felt rather poor, but i thought whatever, its old. I pulled into my driveway this afternoon and as i did 'bang', foot went to the floor, sounded like something fell off and now i have no clutch haha. I'm assuming the clutch cable has **** itself? I know this is a problem for them...I'm contemplating doing the clutch at the same time though.

Now, my question is; It's got a MK2 GTI 5 speed box in it, what cable will I need? (Given that it IS, infact, the cable...to dark to see now). Do i get a cable for the MK2 gti, or my MK1...i'm not sure what determines it.

    That's all,
    -Drew.

If it went bang and to the floor and you now have no clutch, do you mean it is permanently engaged or disengaged?

on my passed mk1 i did two cables through the fire wall and got the grommet with the new cable , but i had to fabricate the hole where there grommet sits , if it doesnt sit in there proper then you wont get a good feel of the clutch .... i had to change it at the shopping centre one time

Where around the firewall, exactly? Mine was previously a diesel...

If the clutch is now permanently disengaged, it is unlikely to be a broken clutch cable as once broken, the clutch would be engaged. It sounds more like the clutch centre has failed. This would be why you have no drive and no pedal.

where did he say he had no drive?

broken clutch cables are pretty common in mk 1's...
