    Clutch Cable and Gear Box

    Hi all,

An old problem I've had with the spot on the gear box where the clutch cable threads through has reared its ugly head again. Previously I've had the cable slip through the eye-let thing leaving me with no tension on the cable. Cable ties fixed that.

But now with a different cable (new 1 year ago) it's worn a big notch out of the eye-let, much bigger than the thin sliver of before. See pic below.

Anyone else have this issue? What did they do to fix it in the long term? When I installed the new cable it wasn't long enough to fit the grommet that shields the cable from the steel eye-let - maybe it'll fit now?

Lucky this didn't happen on the way to work!

Drill a lil hole on either side of the opening and rivet something strong and blunt there. Might work for you.

well, im pretty sure my box dont have that bit missing :S

think i just poke the cable through the hole and then through the lever.

    Thanks for the replies.

I've used cable ties to tie the cable (!) to the break booster and keep it from slipping out (and the pedal action is much smoother and lighter). So it's all driveable again.

I would have thought the original hole was strong and blunt, but I guess you can't underestimate the effect of the cable rubbing against it everyday for years.

    Any other thoughts, ideas, experiences?

Welding would be the ideal fix for that or even box replacement.

Failing that I'd be looking at turning up a stepped bush to go in there.

Yep, welding seems the best bet. Not keen on getting a new box as I (maybe foolishly) paid a small fortune on having it rebuilt a few years back. Plus all the mucking around of pulling it out etc. I'm not sure how much longer I'm drivehave the car - I love it dearly but it's getting time to change up.
