    Centering engine

was just under hood of the golf just now, and realised the engine sits all the way to the right.

Just wondering if it should be center and what problems can be cause if its not?

    Cheers

you'll find most ff engines are offset like that, to compensate for gearboxes and everything.

i doubt vw wouldnthave put it there without a reason :p

What im saying is you can slide the engine left and right about 1-2cm ish
Im just wondering if its like that to compensate for something as you said Nathe.

you can actually slide it?? i musthave misunderstood what you wrote :s

afaik it shouldnt be sliding around in the bay at all :s maybe one of the mount inserts have failed?? if the engine mounts are diong their job, it should not be sliding aorund :s

Well i just had a play, and yes it moves slightly. its the mount on drivers side, and the gearbox mount near battery. the other two are solid.. either way i just undid them and used the jack to help move it over a bit. re tighten them and its all center now.

Ill get pics later to show what i mean

Engine should be centered in the bay. The bolts on the end mounts at the gearbox and pulley side should be roughly in the centre of their slots.

If it's off centre all you're like to mess up is the gear shift linkage being out of whack.

If the car's real low and the driveshaft is hitting the inside of the drive flage pushing the motor accross a bit might help.

Car is not real low, maybe a 2" drop at most. can still fit like 3-4 finger between guard and rim up front.

Ill go get pics later, feel rather crook so CBF pushing car out into light
