i'm sure i'm going the right way. does a foot on the brake make that much difference?
As suggested, a good quality socket and bar with an extension of some sort. Make sure you are trying to undo it the right way though. Both sides are normal right hand threads so undo anti clockwise. Some people incorrectly think they are LH thread.

I used the wrench with a foot long bar on the end and stomped on it. The longer the bar the more torque you create.
Try to heat it up and then throw water on it, if the nut is a different density to what its screwed on to then one will cool down more than the other and should therefore be smaller. It worked when my alloy wheel was stuck on the hub.

Yeah I tried my rattler and a 4ft bar that bent my socket tool, need a better tool, had a quick look at a tool shop today their t bar was $80. Might try and borrow one
Supercheep sell a tyre wrench that is extendable and that you can fit a standard 1/2 inch socket on. Best thing in the shop imo.
