What carb are we talking about a Solex or a Weber? Either way, I believe with a stock cable it goes though the ferrel (cylinder thingy) and then the long shaft is retained by a spring held in place by a retaining circlip?
heres a oicture of both ferrel ( thankyou doesy) and the passenger side of the carby, theres also this hook type of metal thing that doesnt look like it does anything..

what would everyone think of ssr viennas on a mk1? they look good on mk4/5's not so sure about the old school golfs.

You need clips for the hub caps. Part number is 321601175B. I think I may be able to pick some up over the weekend if you need them! I've got those same caps too, just polished them up recently and they came up a awesomely!

video of car running, still wont idle. if i take off the throttle it just dies as it shows in the video
