to build or not to build

hi guys, i'm new on here ,i've got a 1990 citigolf from S.A ,has been a real good car to me, at the stage where its going to need some money thrown at it, i haven't had any other golfs but i'm pretty sure it goes good, 32/36 dgv, 10:1 comp std ,probably higher .the head was recond and planed by the last owner. paid $1800 about 6 yrs ago now i'm trying to decide whether to rebuild it or get something else. does anyone no if all 1.8 pistons will fit it,its H.V engine code, i think it has a little piston slap, its not extreme mainly on start up, it did a core plug a few weeks back, got real hot ,blow by has increased, not using oil, its actually still running well and i'm pretty sure its not a brg, they normally get worse as oil thins at temperature, its also got quite bad rust around the slam panel where the tailgate closes..but from there forward its sweet. do you guys have to import engine parts or get from aus, and if i did rebuild it would hi per parts cost much more than standard...... places i've talked to cant find a H.V CODED golf engine ..thanks for listening ...heres some pics

You have to save this car, there aren't many 1990 MK1's in Australia. Probably count them on 1 hand.

Nearly all the 1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 Vw/Audi motors will fit straight in.

Can you double check that engine code. I can't find HV anywhere.

    Cheers

I had an hv in a south African jetta. All 1.8 bottom ends are the same so rarely worth rebuilding. I'd use that 1.8 head, stick a 2l bottom end under it and hold on.

Pro Pain, you have to keep this car. I'm from South Africa and I know there are very few citi golfs in Australia. Listen to Golf Loon..

If you sell please let me know, I see this all the time at the airport (I also work on the mines) and have been tempted to leave my number under your wiper if ever you wanted to part with it.

hey thanks for the replies, so i've rechecked the engine stamping and yes definitely HV ,so can i just tell the parts man i've got something else that they recognise, the people i have talked to are vw specialists and as soon as i mention HV the just say they have no listing for it. bearings ive got prices for, just pistons i'm having trouble with. gpw swallowtail.... the rear louvre came with the car, it has a badge on it ''executive'' if i was closer you could have it, makes the back window look even narrower than it already is. hey luke i travel to the airport from margs, so i need to keep a reliable car, i either fix this or replace it, i've already got a costly hotrod project going so i couldn't just set it aside , i would prefer to keep it but no harm in talking...when do you fly in/out, i'm thursdays, i would also be chasing a rear panel, the bit the tail light are mounted to,anyone cutting one up... cheers fellas

hey mate i do 8+6 Wed - Wed and currently working at Rubicon. I've checked it out in the carpark and it's a nice car indeed. You should def tidy up the small bits here and there and keep it running about for yourself to enjoy (but if you do ever sell hit me up ) Nice car indeed, I may do a cut up sooner rather than later but hit up Golfballs, he just cut one up the other week
