Suggest you find another testing station... One that knows Mk1s
There are plenty of users on this forum who can help you find one and the parts you need in Sydney.
First Hi everyone, I am a newcomer to Australia and happy to find a local forum for such a great car!
Now, I bought a convertible (TYPE 15) auto this was as I thought the Mk1 GTI was too difficult to find here... I have to do a safety check for registration and the mechanic said the brakes were not good enough. He did not even put it on the brake testing machine, but put on the report that:
- excessive brake pedal travel, less than 20% of travel remains
As most of you know, this is a known issue with Mk1 brakes which brakes well but late. This is something you get used to anyway and it did not occured to me it would be a problem... The car passed two month ago when I bought it and less than 1500 km later he said I have to change MC... blah, blah... Probably because he never set foot on a car like that?
Would you suggest a way to solve this? Is there more tolerant safety checks around Sydney?
Txs for your help and BTW I am looking for parts, any good address to share?
Cheers

See Ron at C&S Auto as he does rego checks. It's just off the M5 at Padstow, about 15 minutes from the airport.
This was quick, thanks!

some pictures of my "best" Mk1 ever! 1500 only were produced by Oettinger the "sorcerer" as we call it, this was before VW produced the tamer KR engine in 1800 cc, these cars were raced and very few remains and mostly at "home"
The car has a genuine odometer reading at 103 KM, I am the fourth owner and even the stickers are genuine and hidden... 136 HP at 7000 revs/mn and no red zone!
Spare parts are just "priced as made of gold", a bare head cost 8000 AUD, a valve is 100 AUD if you are lucky to find one, and you need 16! as you can see on the pics. The DOHC was driven by sprockets instead of belt, crank was balanced, pistons were forged, odometer at 240 km/h, a street racing machine that cost twice the price of the normal GTI in 1980 and was available at any VW dealership...
Overall I have had 6 Mk1 GTI's and this one is not the easiest to drive in town as torque is pretty low under 4000 r/mn, but it has so much character when you cross the line!
Have a nice day. for any discussion about Mk1/Mk2 GTI, just post!
Welcome to the forum.
Take it to another testing centre. I usually drive around a few until I find one that is not busy and looks like he wants my cash
Nice cars you have there, hows about some pics.

The wheels are the "original" 14' ats fitted on the oettinger series, most ppl changed for 15' replicas and unfortunately the 14' were not wearing very well specially in racing situation... remember it was the 80'! I still have them but as you can see I have some ugly but perfectly round (!) Uniroyal and less likely to be stolen alloys on the car.
How to find them? Probably on Ebay in Europe and with patience? They look very good to me, as they dont look to much like aftermarket (they are not anyway) and are a bit more stylish than the original steel rims.
