As it is fitted with a carb and has 4 doors, I doubt it'll be a true GTI. A number of things give away a GTI. The injected engine for starters, EG engine code for the 1600 110bhp or DX for the 1800 112bhp.

I am not aware of any RHD GTIs being made in 4 dr except possibly the CITI GTI which is sold ion South Africa.

The GTI all had vented front brakes and an oil cooler, sports seats, deeper front spoiler (2 piece) side stripes along the bottom of the doors. Early cars had a 4speed box and the later ones, around 1979 on had a 5 speeder.

I think most if not all had an oil temp gauge in the centre console until the MFA came std with the 1800s.

I am sure you will enjoy it anyway.

Is the engine code likely to be the letters FP at the start of my engine no on rego, where on the engine can i find the letters, it seems the guy i brought it from was dodgy, i just looked for the number on the engine, and it is different to the rego.

Definately not a GTI. It`ll be a GLS or LS.
What month 76 was it registered in?
Still lots of fun, enjoy the car.

Engine code between 3 and 4 plugs on the block, just below the head gasket. It could be an FP. Not Got ETKA on this laptop so I can't check.
