never underestimate the power of the 1600 carbie engine

They actually go pretty well, not like they need to push around alot of weight.

yea, but dont over estimate them either! They do move alright, it'll scare a few things on the street, but nothing outrageous.

I'd say whack a 1800 from a mk 3 or similar in, with a big carb (or two) and you'll be laughing!

and don't forget the brakes - mk 1 GTI spec are fine, just have to get used to them

and please please please please - don't touch the outside!

yeah i was thinking that. is the mk3 1.8 or 2.0L better? but thered be quite a bit of work involved to change that back to carby?

and dont worry, this is going to stay 100% original on the outside sleeper all the way.

1800 will fit in straight up. just plug up the inject holes and whack it on a carb, and it should be a sure fire simple combo.

2.0 requires more work. from memory you have to upgrade the fuel pump to and electric one, and there's something else too (but i've forgotten atm)

I'm not sure of the NSW rules, but in Vic, you need an Engineers cert for any engine greater than 300cc (.3L) bigger than standard, which means 1.8 will go in no worries, and Vicroads (RTA) won't have any issues. 2.0 may require a cert, depending how tight they are, cause although the GTI's came with 1.8s, and the chassis can handle a 2.0 (because of the previous thingy) they may not like it as much, and want a eng cert for it, which could be a PITA, and in the end not really worth it for 200cc.

but yea, you ge the jist of what i'm saying? I'm sure someone else will chime in with a more specific answeer...

i'm not even sure of the power differences between a 2.0 and 1.8 - anyone?

    EDIT:
all depends on how much you wanna spend; and what performance you want. a proper tuned GC 1.8, with big carb, exhaust and mild cam, will scare quite a few things on the street, and beat a fair few things - just off the line, not to mention the corners... pretty basic setup, with nothing that is too fancy really, but it'll work. sometimes simple is best!

    Excellent find!
In stock form about 25hp at the crank between the 1.8CL motor and the 2.0L GL spec 115hp vs 90hp! Not to mention the 30+nms of torque. The MK3 2.0L is great, just not in a mk3
And as you said before with a nice cam 270+ and a head port and deck your looking at closer to 140hp...

I'm really starting to get jealous of some of you people with your project cars, I wish I had some space and mechanical know how...
    Someday...
