    (Done) Bit of help to get the mk1 on the road.

    It’s so damn close to being roadworthy that these last couple of things are painfully annoying.

    I have managed to get the wipers to do all the things they are suposta do apart from return back to the bottom of the windscreen. We've replaced the stalk, the motor and relay #19 in slot M and #53 in slot K. I’ve also opened up the fuse box and it looks brand new inside. They wipe when you spray and have the 3 speed settings, but they don't go back to the bottom of the windscreen when you switch them off, they just stop. Any ideas?

    One other major problem was that the carbie was sucking in extra air with the fuel making it almost impossible to start and drive. We found that one of the fuel lines from the pump had a crack in it, replaced that and it runs fine. The problem now is that when you put it in to a gear other than park or neutral the idle drops to about 500rpm. It sounds like it will stall but it doesn’t. Also when you rev it in park/neutral the idle will stick at about 1500 - 2000rpm then settle back down to 900-1000rpm (just like the mk2 haha ). I also know very little about carbies so I really don’t know what to do. Here are a couple of pics of the carbie, my dad sugested that the choak is busted.

    pics aren't working.

    I'm not sure if you have, but make get some carbgy cleaner and go nuts with it, inside and out, make sure all the linkages are all free to move (in their proper orders)

    If you dont' think the choke is working, you could always rig it open to confirm. I'm pretty sure dom's drops a few hundred rpm when you put it in gear, I believe because it's 'loading up' the torque converter. I'm not sure if it's as much as 500 rpm though.

    how does it all behave when it's warm, does it behave like this all the time? (the rev sticking etc etc) or just when cold??

    I think the choke is riged open actualy.

    It does it all the time, warm or cold, it will sit at a higher rpm then slowly go back down.

    Ill give it a blast with some carbie cleaner and see if that helps any.

    Did the carby get changed ever?

    Manual ones have a smaller jet than an auto one.

    Auto carbys make manuals go great, but maybe a manual carby would make the auto idle too low??

    Could also be dissy timing if it takes too long to return to a steady idle.

    Haha i was going to swap it today with a manual carby that stu gave me but decided not to. Good to know.

    To my knowledge the carbie is original.

    BTW the emissions gear was removed, i dont think that would have an effect as taking it off didnt change anything.

    I cleaned the carbie with carbie cleaner and followed instructions that i found on the net on how to set the idle up correctly. The idle is now good and sits at 900rpm and it doesnt stick anymore when you rev the engine.

    I dont know if this is normal but the carbie makes a very noticable hissing/sucking sound when you take the air filter piping off where as it didnt before. I asume its normal because to make it go away you screw in the Bypass screw and that stuffs up the idle.

    However the idle still drops to 500-600rpm when in gear, its a little better than before and feels less shaky. I only have about 2m of room behind the car, but it does drive that 2m without a problem and the idle does come back to rest at 500-600rpm without an issue. Is there a way to increase the idle when the car is in gear?

    Does anyone have any ideas about the wipers?

    doubtful that this is true - there are several "emissions" controls on the standard carbies, mainly to do with altering ignition timing (via that mk1 2-port advance/retard dizzy, which is connected to the carbie. if you want it to run properly, you'll definately need to ensure that all the wires and vacuum lines are all connected properly between carbie, dizzy, and electrical harnesses..... which is a pain. precisely why almost all mk1's end up with an aftermarket carb

    ps- the wipers issue - i thought that the intermittent wiper relay had something to do with the feature of the wipers returning - however if you have the intermittent setting working, then it must be somewhere else. I owuld suggest looking at earth wires going to hte motor, as its possible there is a separate earth wire for the return function.

    Re: the carby- it is normal to hear a hiss when the air filter is off. Just one other area to check is the flange between the manifold and the carby. They are rubber and are known to split, allowing air straight into the manifold.

    Wiper return, see if you can get your hands on another wiper relay and see if that works. Sometimes a relay will lose bits of it's function before the lights go out altogether (in a sense).

    Hi spyda,well done nutting out the idle return problem.

    The manual says idle speed in park should be 950 rpm, + or - 50 rpm.Maybe you could set it at the high tolerance and see how that goes.

    I have my idle(golf auto) set to 950 rpm and on gear selection it drops to about 700 - 750 rpm so you're not far off.
    I have all vac. hoses connected and I've re-co'd the carb.

    And sometimes I think my wipers have stopped,
    but they're actually just moving really really slow

    What i ment by it didnt change anything is that it was running at the same crapness level with and without the emissions gear. Ill double check the vacume lines tomorrow and give the earth wire thing a go to fix the wipers. Cheers mate.

    Cheers for the info man, i will increase the idle tomorrow and i think it will be set. Ill just have to make enough room to get it out of the back yard and on the road and see how it goes.

    They are waaay to slow, id hate to be stuck in some heavy rain. Are the wipers slow because they are old or because they are made that way?

    Im guna give this a go later on and see if it helps or just replace it with my mk2 motor.
