Probably the best thing to do is find a 1.8 GTI solid lifter head, stock with 40 / 33 valves guide spacing is wider than 1600 heads and valve size can be increase slightly over stock. All later hydraulic lifter heads are ok too but will require a bigger oil pump from later engine swapped in.

NB: a modification will be needed to steam hole and oil return from memory to fit 1600 block but not too complicated.

I am 99.9% sure that the mk2/1800 head won't go on a mk1 1600 block. The mk2 1600 engine is a short stroke 1800 so the heads are inter changeable.
    I'd be fitting a mk2 engine before throwing money at a mk1 1600.

The 8v 1800 head will be the same size as the late 1600 one except with bigger valves! VW do not like to use a heap of different castings chamber cc will be 30cc for both. Dish cc / deck height in the piston will control the compression ratio for the 2 different capacities. There would be great benefit if you were able to go up to a 1.8 though. I like the 1.8 combo with 83mm pistons giving a good 1900 ish cc heaps more torque and will still rev hard.

I am still not convinced as the mk1 engine has a flat head and the combustion chamber is a dish in the piston.

Agreed the 1900 is a smart compromise between the 1800 and a 2E 2 litre conversion.

@ MARIO, what's the engine number on your block?? I'll look it up on ETKA

The 1.8 head has an extra oil return which the 1.6 block does not have.

    Thats correct Loon,
there is more than one 1600 head, there is a heron head which has no combustion chamber and the more common one that looks a lot like the 1800 head though the combustion chamber is a slightly different shape. It doesnt really matter which head comes off the 1600 but needless to say you will need the correct pistons to suit the new head. You'll need news one if you want to get up to the 10.0 :1 compression mark anyway (factory in the 1.8gti motors). If you are on a budget I'd seriously just be trying to source a s/h GTI 1.8 8V these go great and as nobody really is chasing them should be cheap. I'm not saying that the 1600 wouldnt be strong but it wont be cost effective.
