Hey mate, i just took matters in my own hands and gave it a go. I havnt had the time to confirm this yet, however i went to bunnings and got Ranex Rustblaster. This supposadely dissolves and converts rust. I gave it a quick spray just before, waited a couple of mins and scratched abouts with a chisel, and it seams it is working to some point, but it hasnt gone to perfect metal. Will have another proper go tmoro morning and confirm.

This is where i'm at the moment. Was gonna start with the rustconverter but it got a bit too late. First thing tmoro morning im going to start cleaning everything, and cutting out all the rust i cant 'convert'. I found a CigWeld mig welder for 350 and im planning on getting it. Gotta aquire a gas bottle too :(

Well i've been putting in time lately after work and etc to try and get something sorted. Have been putting in a litle bit of time everyday, but havnt gotten crazy far. I have managed to save up a little and bought my self a Cigweld Transmig 135amp mig welder. Im practising on gasless at the moment until i get a little used to welding. I'll buy a gas bottle when im a bit better, and try take things into my own hands and weld up the rust problems. I never liked the fact of getting other people to fix my problems, so ill definately be fixing/welding my own rust problems, whether it looks good or bad.

Anyway, so i've grabbed the grinder with a flappy 120 grit disc, and hit the footwell and fire wall. I've found out whats rust and whats good metal. Even though there are rust stains here and there im not going to cut it out, just going to treat with rust converter and paint over. I've cut some of the big rust problems, and am going to be welding in a new sheet when i get better at welding. I have also started off blocking off the holes in the engine bay to give it the shaved look. Will be sanding and smoothing it down once the bog dries. It was also my bday yesterday, so got a tiny bit of cash to spare into some cool things i've wanted to get for this golf, like new dash switches and little bits and peices.

Got a bit of time today, and thought id work on the golf. I've decided to name her Lucy, for reasons unknown to me, i called her Lucy by accident, and it stuck. Anywhoo, i got the grinder with flap disc and continued grinding away, everywhere where there might have been rust. I was working around the footwell today, and cleaned everything up. I sprayed it with rust converter, and am going further work on the footwells tmoro. The holes near the footwells are noticable, but nothing extreme. Would anyone have any opinion on using this product here to fix it up? It would be alot easier, and less trickier that to use a welder in that tight spot. Ideas?

Next was cleaning behind the firewall, from the fender side. there was some rust too. My plan is to either use the Metal enforcer above as its small, or if the metal seams too thin tmoro then i will have to weld a piece in. Currently perfection isnt everything to me, as it is my very first proper build, and i still have alot of skills to pick up on lol

Well thats all for today. I have a friend that can hook me up with free gas, i just have to find a gas bottle. So im pretty happy that i would be saving a fair bit of money for gas atleast. :)

mate I hope you're welding those spots in the engine bay before putting filler on them? The filler will only fill the holes, it wont fix the problem. Always try and cut the cancer out, then weld in fresh patches of steel :) The MIG torch will get in those spaces in the footwells no worries. So weld 'em up! For both of them however I'd make a template for a patch, cut the rusty section out and weld in you new patch, as those holes are too big just to fill with just weld/or filler (look at Pete Jones's "another wreck another race car" thread) Plenty of great body work tips there mate!

Apart from the crap quality and constant splutter, do gasless migs have any down sides? Meaning, would it be worse quality than using gas, in terms of rust coming quicker, or weaker welds?

just weaker welds really, they just don't have the same quality as gas MIG welds

So managed to get mig with gas setup from my friend hakan, but is only very limited to just a few days.

.... and i await the criticism haha. Good, bad, excellent welds it doenst really phase me. I did my own welds and thats what im most happy about. I love to learn and do everything myself, and even though i only just started welding 2 days ago, im not too fussed how it looks, as long as it performs.

Thanks josh !! Grinded all the welds to a very smooth finish, and it seams the welds are solid and good. So im a happy chappy :)

Well if i keep on working on it with the motivation i've had within the past week or two, i should see this being painted very very soon !
