Nice one, glad you are back.
The old one was a swallowtail, although its hard to tell. Is the new one?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a swallowtail? I've heard the expression a lot but never really knew what it meant.
The original Golf is a 2/76 pre ADR 27a that I have owned since 77, the replacement is a 9/76 with ADR 27a and air pump etc. I remember the rush to get pre 27a Golf back in 76. I intend to put the 1.8 motor (VR) and 5sp from the other one into it. I have only done 40k on it in the last couple of years.
heres a photo of the rear, it looks the same to me.

pic of my Mk1 below is a swallowtail........ recess below the number plate is the main give away i believe.

Nice Golf mate glad your back on the road, back in time for the Nationals
I'm soo euro even my missus is shaved...
Sorry to see the picture of the old car - sad
Loon must have better eyes than I do - can't tell if its a swallow trail.
Bound to be tho if its a 2/76...
(new one isn't)
Good to be back on the road anyway
Had a look at the old one and it certainly is a swallowtail. It s a bit more obvious in this pic

The things you learn on the forum. I have been around Mk1's for 30 years and didn't notice the rear panel change - obviously sometime in 76
I might just have to pursue getting the old one fixed now, knowing how rare they must be.
What about the bonnet? When did it changed from smooth front edge to a crease?
Don't worry, I didn't know what a swallow tail was before I joined the forum either, and I've been around MkI's 25 years...
I know about the bonnet, but only that it changed somewhere between 76 and 79...
Maybe Synchro or Loon can shed some light.
