Unfortunately there is one less MK1 GTi in Australia. Although it was very rusty it was salvageable and another 2-dr for parts was purchased. It was an original 78 GTi 1600\4sp, a private german import. But, they were no match for a bushfire........dead, soon to be buried.
Saved was engine\f-inj\gearbox plus dash and original wheels and the vin plate as they were stored elsewhere.

No coming back from a fire like that
So sad to see and glad there were no lives lost. We have already had a few bad fires here in the west this summer.
Before the advent of sand / media blasting, caustic dipping not so many years ago car bodies were furnaced at a fairly low temperature to burn off the old paint and underseal treatments. The pic you posted reminded me of this.
Those shells are likely good donors for internal repair panels before you bury them.
Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...
If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??
Cheers,
Grant...
I have an ‘83 Lhasa Green 1.8 Mark 1 GTI here in Perth, WA. Owned it for the past 38 years. Totally original and definitely not for sale! Too many happy memories in it and still great fun to drive.
Did see a white 1.6 Mark 1 GTI in Joondalup about 12 years ago.
