I have a genuine 78 German import GTI, 1600/4-sp. Been in Oz since the late eighties but unregistered since 1994. It hasn't survived well and the body is a complete rust bucket. It's currently stored awaiting restoration.
mine looks like a GTI, was only missing the chin spoiler and the grill surround I've coloured black rather than red...oh and I've changed motors, but the Weber sounds better than any efi system...

Well thats two genuine mk1 gti golfs so far, one more for the cabriolet. i'd say there may be one or two more owned by people who dont use this site. But its a travesty there is so little. And overseas they scrap them left right and centre without thinking.
There are three tin tops in Adelaide that I know of. One white and two red.
The white one was brought in as a low volume import by VW back in the day so not all individual private imports.
Plus Alex's white one...

My 83 Campaign GTI.
Now rendered "smashed front & rear"
Have all the parts now to rebuild it all, bar a radiator.
Just need to find the $10K to straighten it!
