    Air Suspension

    Hi there,

    I found out today that air suspension is allowed on the car. So that is on the up side.

    Anybody who can answer the following please do and please if you can, can you upload pics of your car.

    The question/s:

    Did it affect your driving comfort, and how bad/much better did it get?

    Did it affect your steering, and how bad/much better did it get?

    The reason for me asking is because my engineer asked me why I wanted to do it, and I told hime because I want to and it will be pretty mad having a Mk1 on bag suspension, and he said it makes the ride not as comfortable and it affects steering.

    It really depends what kind of setup you get. Air suspension has come a long way.

    Traditionally it affected the handling because when you turn air would transfer side to side in a basic front and back system.

    These days company's like airrex and airlift are making full height and damper adjustable struts that they claim can out perform coilovers. Also allowing a harsh or soft ride pending your setup.

    Just be aware of the bump steer and camber change, basically you can have a good alignment at one height, so the other will be off

    Biggest issue with air suspension is the lower you go the softer the spring, and the higher the stiffer, which is the opposite to what you want from a ride perspective (more likely to hit the bumpstops low)
    None of this is really that much of a big deal if you are prepared and set the car up so the standard position is what you actually live with

    Well, I'll try and set it up that the normal car height is the driving height and then when parked it pretty much lowers the car and thats pretty much it.

    There's quite a few laws regarding engineering air ride that you should check out. Getting it legal is quite an expensive job - requires expensive management system.

    I showed my engineer a package I would install if I got a system and he said there will be no trouble as long as it is installed properly and right.

    Air ride for mk1 is pretty damn pricey. I'm half way through getting my bits for my cabby and it's been expensive, So be aware of that. The other thing is no one in Aus has done air in a mk1 so it's hard to get any info/personal experience.

    Thanks bud. I have searched around and agree, they are pricey but damn it'll be a mighty fine ride if you can get out at the shops or a cafe and lower it while walking away...

    If I am going to do it I will get either a Bag Riders kit:

    If I buy the parts separate from one another I will need the engineer to check it all etc and then sort of need him to help install it.

    As far as I know, both mentioned kits are pretty much bolt in kits. Its only the lines and electronics etc that will need fiddle work to make it look neat and make sure it doesn't get busted up during driving.
