    MegaSquirt.

Mine is going EFI due to the turbo conversion. After looking around it's easier just to make up a manifold with fuel rail to suit. There are plenty of small 4 cyc manifolds available that can be cut and shut cheaply. You could just CNC a flange and create it from scratch also if that's your thing.

Jarred is pretty much on the money though. With the MegaSquirt I'll only require a TPS, IAT and CTS. It has an on-board MAP to handle 21PSI already.

Controlling fuel only with the ECU is pretty straight forward and cheap if you can DIY and are decent with a soldering iron. You can pick up the MS2 kits and Wideband O2/gauge for around $850. (That's everything... ECU, wiring loom, tuning cables, software, sensors, relay box, testing tools etc etc) You could do it cheaper again without the wide band O2 (~$250) but skipping this will make tunning a little harder.

Throw in a EFI pump and you're done.

Yep, waterboys dad has a 1.6l with a 16v head. There was a car in PVW with it aswell. I dunno whats involved though and i dunno why you would do it other than to follow race regulations.

I asked about this too. The main problem was you either need the knowledge or your going to have a hard time finding someone to tune it for you. If you know what your doing it is the best way to go but for someone like me who can only guess what TPS (throttle pos sensor?), IAT and CTS is it aint such and easy option.

Have to put up a bunch of pics when you start Scott

I have a small understanding of EFI funtions, just reading on how it relates to the golf and if possible.
turbo or supercharged 8V would be pretty fun

You can, but the resulting compression is very low and more suited to a turbo/SC application

The yanks fit 16v heads to their 8v ABA engines, but they use ABF pistons in the process to make a half-arsed "ABF" engine - or they do it to make a 16vT.

Aftermarket EFI is a waste of time & money unless you're modifying (or planning to modify) your stock engine beyond the reach of the standard ECU - or if you have an engine to transplant which came with no electrics

My olmand has a 16v head with 16v bottom end (Bloke is PL code from a US passat im pretty sure) engine is destroked with custom crank, rods etc...

In regards to after market ECU. Well Motec if you have big dollars, then there is Autronic etc. This mega-squirt stuff seems awsome for those keen to learn and tune.

i take it the Digifant and Digifant 2 is the VW efi system for golfs?

DO they have the injectors in manifold, and could one be setup to run on a Mk1 engine?
    Pretty interesting read anyway,
