Aero catch bonnet pins

Aero catch bonnet pins has any one out there fitted them to a mk1 before? I got mine in the mail, just not sure how I m going mount them

I'm just guessing, but does that masking tape line run with the top plate? And the other two just run your desired width?

So, the process is,

1. determine where the pins are to go in the slam panel. Make sure that you can actually get to the back of it to do the nut up. Mark this position but don't drill it yet.

2. Using tape on the slam panel draw a line from your pin mark sideways onto the guard and forwards where you can see it with the bonnet shut. What we're trying to do is transfer the mark from under the bonnet to on top of the bonnet.

3. Shut the bonnet and run a piece of tape across the bonnet using the tape on the guards as the reference.

4. Run tape up the bonnet vertically using the pieces from under the bonnet as a reference.

5. Check that the tape across the bonnet is the same distance from the front edge of the bonnet at both sides.

6. Check that vertical tapes are the same distance from the edges of the bonnet. (Both catches should be the same distance from the edge.)

7. Using the cross hairs on the aerocatch template you can align the template and eyeball the result. Draw the outline on the bonnet.

8. drill a smallish inspection hole ~6mm in the bonnet through both skins and allow the drill bit to make a mark on the slam panel below.

9. Now you can see how accurate you were with the marking out. ( I got to within 0.5mm on one side and 3mm on the other.)

10. Adjust positions as required. Don't drill the slam panel yet.

11. now you can cut out the bonnet and mount the catches. I used hole saws at each end and slit it out in between.

12. Once the bonnet catches are in you can shut the bonnet and check that you can see your marks for the pins straight down through the hole in the base of the catch.

13. Drill the slam panel and fit the pins.

14 Adjust the length of the pins so the bonnet sits nice and flush height wise. Remember that you need to close the latch and pull up slightly to check the bonnet closed height as the holes in the pins are elongated.

15. fit the rubber buffers over the pins and trim as needed. If you've got it right you'll have to press down slightly on the bonnet to close the catch.


That should get you started.

The bonnet above is fibreglass so I used the plate under the aero catch, the nuts and bolts that come with the kit should suffice in a steel bonnet.

You might have to trim away more of the inner skin to be able to do the nuts up.
