Dont mean to hi-jack this. Its a very similar motor though, Gav any idea if a BJS motor from a 9N Polo Gti is similar in installation for a Mk1 as a AGU is, or is it like an AEB where certain things have to be changed to make it work? Obviously throttle body would have to be changed, so would a Mk4 Gti ecu and loom work with that engine? Anyone else know?
Could be another option if AEB is a bit too much work i thought

Not having done it I don't know the exact details.

I believe the preference for using the AEB/AGU block is there are cast in bolt holes that will take suitable mounts for the MK1/2. The later 06A block, which IIRC is everything with a 1.8T after the AGU.

The Polo BJX motor would seem to be a good choice at first glance, transverse is a big plus, the immo can be defeated on the ME7, I already have a Polo ECU done as a loaner.

The AGU inlet manifold wouldn't match perfectly, the ports are different sizes. You could get a phelonic gasket and use that to fix the problem though.

I would expect that the AGU peripherals would run a bare Polo engine, again not done it, so can't be 100%.

Doing this research up front will save you loads of time later on.

Just reviving this thread before I put my AEB on a boat after new years - I've noticed there's one or two APU's for sale in Aus and was wondering if it was worth putting one of these in instead of the AEB - it'd save me 2-3 months of time waiting for the engine to arrive. I like the idea of things just bolting up perfectly - I don't mind having to swap a few engine parts to go from longitudinal to transverse - but having to fabricate mounts and get them certified is a bit off putting.

PLus point for the APU in my eyes is the ME7 ECU. Defeatable and flashable on the bench. 06A block though so not as good on the mounting front.
