    93 cabby project

    Hi guys,
Me and my son have just picked up a golf cabby as a project. Its clean with just the bonnet and the front, rear bumpers need to be painted. My son starts driving in 2 years so we have plenty of time to get it looking nice.

The biggest problem with is that the auto trans is buggered and that it has no drive.
The plan is to pull the auto box out and do a manual conversion.

Can anyone help me locate parts for this conversion i.e., manual box, steering rack, drive shafts, clutch pedal etc….

    Hey there,

Congrats on the new project car - same colour as ours!

Gearbox should be easy to find, any mk1-2-3 gearbox from a 4 cylinder car will work and fit. You will need to find a gearbox mount but I make them out of converted 4 speed mounts, so plenty of possibility there.

Driveshafts, I would buy some brand new complete from German Auto Parts. By far the best value option.

Clutch pedal assembly - well on that one I'm not to sure, as I've never done an auto-manual conversion on a mk1 however plenty of others have and will chime in I'm sure.

    Thanks gldgti,

Even thought of just looking out for a donor to swap parts so also on the look out for one.
Had a play with the roof yesterday as it wasn't working using the switch. The last owner never looked into it and just opened and closed it manually. After a few wiring checks i found it was just a relay that wasn't working.
Refilled the pump and bleed the hydraulics and the roof now works

You use the roof? What are you, a man or a mouse?

Everyone knows the only time you put the roof up is if you see the Queen broken down by the side of the road and offer her a lift in the rain.

I'm pretty confident I'm going to be changing my pedal box because I'm going hydraulic clutch and probably bias brakes. You can have dibs on my existing manual cable clutch pedal box from my 91. Maybe you can trade me for your wings + side indicators - I really want them

    Hahahahaha.

Convertible roofs in good condition is quite hard to find mate. I have a cabby I'm wrecking, check out my sale thread. But even that roof isn't the greaatest

Haha, sorry bud but i don't have any spare wings lying around.
Is the clutch pedal box part of the steering column? Or can I fit a clutch paddle to the existing break pedal box?

We'll had a bit of a win today with the mk1. I bought the car cheap knowing the trans had crapped its self and there was no drive so I was fine with that but when inspecting the front brakes to just give them a clean up I noticed that the outer cv boot had been replaced and that the clips were not secure. I'd thought I would replace the clips and just check inside the boot if it needed more grease and as I peel back the boot i then see the cause of my loss of drive, the bloody cv joint was not even on the splines of the shaft. Hahaha
refitted the cv joint and hey presto!!! It's now moving again. If only the last owner knew he would be kicking him self.
Kind of feel sorry for him now!!

so it's driving!!!!! But it's still a auto So still looking to covert to manual..

    WIN!

Forget the manual, just do a dirty turbo conversion and smoke things
