8v KJET Cold Air Induction - Bunnings style

Loony sent me one of the Volvo KJET air boxes last week. (Thanks Matt!) I had a look around the auto shops and quickly realised that it was going to cost $100s in blue joiners and 3" bends to plumb it in. I bought the $30 air cleaner then went exploring at Bunnings. Here's the result.

All off the shelf 65mm PVC fittings. The 90º elbow had to have its cuff shortened about 20mm on one end and had to be sanded out to fit onto the airbox. The rest was pretty easy. There was even a spare 6mm screw hole beside the radiator for the pipe hanger bracket. About 2 hours fiddling about, $40 in plumbing supplies and a $30 aircleaner.

Does it make it go any better? Haven't driven it yet. Mostly this was easier than trying to work out what the part number for a genuine filter was, then find someone to sell me one.

Well I had fun anyway! Enjoy!

Nothing does it better than DIY. Good stuff there, and love the fact that it costs much less!

All I can say is don't go driving through any big puddle's.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bagging the idea, It's a good one.
    I'd have executed it differently.

I've seen a 6 month old BMW hydrauliced & kick a leg out of bed because they had decided that the cold air intake behind the headlight wasn't good enough & made a setup very similar. $7+G later they changed they mind. All it took was a splash.

My old CAI was weived around in front of the rad. but still had the air filter fitted in the airbox.

The pipe is standard 65mm PVC plumbing stuff.

    65mm is the internal diameter.

The external diameter is about 69mm

The external diameter of the joins is about 75mm, close enough to 3" which allows the air filter to clamp down on it nicely.

I'm not terribly worried about water and hydro locking because this is a fair weather car, I've got a few other cars I can drive if it rains. This golf has seen enough of the elements over it's lifespan, it's getting a rest now. I can't remember the last time it rained enough to make any puddles on the road in any case.
