    Update ~

We have started stripping the car, checking for rust and body damage. Just going through the car to check what it needs done, so far the silver car is going to be restored. Both of the rear quarter guards have rust, so does the front windscreen pan. The hatch has a fair bit of rust around where the seals were, but so far all is good.

Front of the car, pulled the front bumber off and also got the dash out.

Got the left front guard off.

    The mess.

Quick question, has anyone heard of or used flocking on there dashs?

    Another Update.

I stripped the hatch, front left guard, rear left guard and rear left door. I'm impressed by how little rust there is, just a few flicks here and there but nothing bad.

You can see a bit of the rust in this picture:

It is nice to have a parts car, so far the only thing we will need from the parts car is a left door.

I haven't quite decided on colours yet, I was thinking going biege or yellow or maybe even baby blue.

Very jealous, a MK1 diesel is ultimate in my books
Where in the Wide Bay are you?
I live in Hervey Bay and own what must be the only MK2 Golf for atleast 200km in any direction.
Is idea of using flocking in the dash for sound deadning purposes?

Thought I would do some sort of update.
I got the cylinder head checked out and its cracked? Anyway, it is no good so I have to decide on whether or not to just buy a new cylinder head or get another engine. I would prefer to buy the new cylinder head and keep it original, but from what I have been told the diesels are quite slow.
How easy is it to find a 1.6 ltre Turbo Diesel engine from a later model golf?
And, how easy is it to fit a bigger engine into the Mk1's?
One half of the paint off the car has been stripped off, still have to do the other side.
    Sorry, no pictures.

there's plenty of info about later model (petrol) engine swaps in mk 1's in this section, so have a look around and do some research. Most of your questions have probably already been answered.

unfortunately, not too many 1.6D's let alone 1.6TD's floating around, since we never got a model delivered here that had that engine as standard. All would have been private imports, but there still might be a few bits floating around here and there!

oh and yes, 1.5D's are reasonably slow. Good enough to get around in. But don't even think of having friends that need lifts or being anywhere in a hurry!
