78 4 door build. Getting there!!

    Hey all,

Been on here a while, lots of browsing and little posting, met a couple of people off last year for a funeral of a mate of mine, Chris - with the VR6/BBS.

so after losing my temper trying to get my front windows out i decided its about time to host some pics and show progress.... I was into the VW scene back in the UK and have owned a few (91mk1 golf, x2 91 & 90 mk2's mk3 TDi - tweeked engine and it shifted!! - loved it! and my fav the Bora TDI pimp car - 19''Rs6 wheels slammed, recaro leather) so since moving to aussy i decided it was time to get into it again, after months of searching i found the little Gem below, i know its a 4 door but i thought why not, be different? (in denial of not finding a 2 door at the right money!)

work on it when i can at the weekends and so on, thought i would start the interior first, box that off, then engine out (found a 2.0l seat 8v engine so will get that when i find the money) then get a respray in cherry red (seen it on the new golf GTD) got some 14in alloys, but keeping the steelies and wouldnt mind banding them at some point, wheels are going to be painted cream as is the chrome trime down the side, smooth everything else off. Coilovers shoud be here this week then getting a full poly bush kit (off experience, the ride quality and handling of coils with poly bushes is second to none so should be a worth while investment!)

thought and suggestions would be appreciated!! im not a millionaire so some its not a full ground up restoration! i want it on the road for the start of December for some summer cruising! then do something else to it next winter? probable put the 1.6 back in and next year put something with a little more poke in it and save the $$ for it!

pics below so far..... if they have worked?

nice fella! Great to see you getting stuck into it!

    are you re-spraying it yourself?

It was Silver from Factory. Not really into it so Red it is and will stand out a little i hope! esp with the cream wheels and dragging its arse around!

Well the spray thing im trying to figure out, a full respray will set me back around $1500, bit to much for me at the moment. will see how the saving will go but my mate is trying to convince me to do it in my shed, makeshift booth with paper, damp floor, extractor fan, patience and lots of flatting down! will see how things go but will put update up as soon as!

just checked coilover progress, 7-08-2010 17:05 Delivery Agent - BRISBANE - PTT On route to delivery depot

welcome pal, good to see someone else getting stuck into a mk 1!

it's pretty feasable to paint it yourself, your mate sounds like he's on the money. it's not easy, but with the right tools and lots of practice (and some help from youtube!) you should be able to get a pretty decent spray job!

good luck with it all, keep us updated!

hey all... been a while but thought i would put a little update on progress!! I see another mk1 getting done on the gold coast on here... so here is another one for the coast!
This is kind of at a halt now.... saving to go to Europe in a couple of months (to bring back more parts!!) and see the sights.

next on the to do list
    buy a spray gun
    Buy paint
    Obtain patience for sanding
    "rebuild" engine (belts/clean/paint)
get rid of x2 rust spot
    smooth tailgate
    make headlining
figure out how to fix the cracks in the dash and retrim it.
    braided hoses
widen the mk2 gti steelies and get some stretched tyres.
