Webers do make a lot of noise..

I was running an inadequately sized rectangular element type air filter on my IDF at one stage and it made an intemittant sucking noise at high RPM.. turned out the engine was sucking the guts of the filter inward... But you're running foam socks, correct?

Check your exhaust for leaks, dude.

    yeah foam socks...

how would you check for exhaust leaks? (besides where the down point joins and manifold bolts into the head)..say for example there is a hairline crack or pin hole in the exhaust itself somewhere?

Look and listen. If you have a centre flexi, check that too. You'll be able to see where the carbon marks are.

Listen to it running while you're outside the car.. Preferably up on stands (with the wheels chocked, hand brake on and make sure it's in neutral!) so you can stick your head under. Exhaust leaks generally aren't too hard to find..

    Check the joints, first.

so not only do MK1's make great cars on the track, they are also super off road.

travelled up to a 21st about 2 hours out of syd on the weekend. if you take the correct road it is a fairly simple drive on well surfaced road...unfortunately i was stupid enough to follow the directions of a even more stupid mate...which in turn resulted in us getting lost...

evidently, we took the "back roads" which is meant for AWDs and 4x4's depending on the weather as it is an unsealed dirt road which becomes very muddy when it rains...thankfully it hadn't rained or else i may no be here to recall this story but due to the tree cover and lack of sunlight the road was very wet

all seemed fine until 1/2 way along a 30km unsealed track the road took a sharp change of pace and turned into a series of hairpins which climbed to the top of the mountain side...getting too late to turn back we continued as it was getting late and we were very isolated. i had the car in 1st gear climbing wet, muddy haripins. sh*t hit the fan when we slid straight back down one hairpin which had a sheer drop down the valley...on another the car was sliding from side to side and i was very fortunate not end up into the rock wall off the side of the road...

eventually we made it to cabins, both my mate and i white as a ghost and shaking to bits...was definately something i would not want to do in a 8v mk1, on coilovers and sports tires ever ever again. what made it worse if we went the right way the car ferry brought us right to camp site.

it was funny however, when another mate in his hella flush subaru liberty wagon arived at 1030pm white as a ghost did we find out that he took the same road, only he did it at night and was running out of fuel...

nonetheless by the wee hours of the am and many beers later no one really gave a sh*t...a long but eventual story i thought i'd share ahah.
