I would mount the spoiler 2 inches higher up the slam panel so it does not hang below the car so much - that is how it was done on the green one and it makes it appear more subtle.

hmmmmmmm yeah i think you all confirmed my suspicion, i wanted to mount it higher but really hate drilling holes in old cars, especially when its rusts so easily...i might try a chin spoiler as well

years ago, i used to make plywood front lips for my GLD. I used to hold them on with some simple sheetmetal angle brackets and gutter bolts. Anyway, I found you could make it just as deep as a duckbill spoiler, but angle it forward more... used to look mad but the only photo i can find is pretty grainy, sorry. This must be 6-7 years ago...

I think it looks lower than it is because you have the thinner chrome bumpers. Also if you had the plastic wheel arches it might tie it in with the rest of the car. I still think it looks better than without any spoiler regardless.

Pretty Sure the GTi's came out with plastic bumpers, arch trims and duckbill, and some GTi's actually had Black Small bumpers..

Still looks better then nothing, but it does look much deeper then normal. Whats the height of it? i could measure mine and compare?

Which year did GTI's have duckbills? Here's my old 83 model with the small spoiler. You can see how low it was mounted and that car was stock standard original apart from the wheels.

They all had the big spoiler originally AFAIK..

i have the most f*ing annoying air leak somewhere.

i've done all tests possible as in: checked downpipe connection, exhaust manifold connection, carb inflet manifold connection...all the gaskets are brand new as well. i've sprayed "start ya bastard" around where i think it is coming from and it doesn't impact the idle at all, nor does the car hunt at idle either...it sits perfectly on 1000 x rpm.

the more load (i.e. the more you accelerate) you the louder it gets...but you can't hear it at high-revs due to how loud the car is.

if its not the exhaust or carb manifold is it possible worn gaskets within the carbies themselves make that sound?...

by the way the sound is just like a tststststst sound, if that makes sense lol

it doesnt impact performance, but boy its annoying!
