ahah how do you know jace?

hmm i'll have to look into...still a couple things on my list which need attention first.

it is very true that mk1's need a lot of tinkering..

yesterday one window winder decided to snap in half so i replaced them with 2 spares i had.

today i changed the oil and oil breather filter which was leaking

i also then decided to find out where a small oil leak was coming from..in doing so i decided to nip up the vacuum fitting in the carb manifold as it was loose...only to have it snap clean in half. i had to knock a torque spline into it and unwind it..so now the car has no vaccum ... i.e no breaks and its stuck in the garage

the car was also dropping in power occassionally today (never done this before) it may be either a tunning issue or the points on the dizzy are worn and the timing is getting thrown out a bit...i think i might switch to a factory electronic ignition setup soon

    hmmm back 2 study.

Probably had something to do with the vac leak, dude. Was it idling irregular?

well this is the thing...under load there sounds like there is a small air leak...but it doesn't hunt at idle and has been running good. i checked the exhaust and carb manifold and both were tight and have new gaskets (from the build)

last week i want to start the engine and it was on 3 cyl...i put new plugs in that i had and its been fine since.

today after not driving it for two days i went to repco, it was driving fine and then stuttered once or twice and lost power for 1 or 2 seconds...

i wonder if these two seperate issues are related at all?.....

tomorrow im going to try and source a new fitting for the vac and see if the air leak has gone and if it runs smoother

on another note i also changed the oil from genuine 5-30 vw oil to 10-40 full synthetic penrite oil as the lifters were getting noisy at high temperatures (i also have a set of new lifters waiting to go in)

    any thoughts???........

It should have nothing to do with your oil change.

Generally a vac leak will get better the more you open the throttle if it's only a small one, and it usually makes an engine stumble, not completely lose power.

Spray aerostart or start ya bastard around the manifold with the engine running. When you spray it over a spot where there's a vac leak, the engine RPM should increase..

These problems can be hard to diagnose over an internet forum.. It may not be anything to do with a vac leak at all. That's only a suggestion given that you had a loose fitting. Also, be sure to check your soft mounts.

You could always take it to a competent mechanic...

They were cheap, and damaged. I spent $150 getting one straightened and rash removed and still have to give them a polish and remove all the crud. I was thinking of selling them but am now at a point where I won't get my money back for them.

Importing yourself from USA might be cheaper.

replaced the vacuum fitting on the carb manifold today...

car is runnin OK but still something not 100%...either I'm to pedantic or if I have to take a stab at it, It could also be a timing issue...it hasn't dropped in power today whatsoever but it does just hestitate a little, almost as if the timing is slightly retard...
