Some time back I sold the complete wiring look to help out a mate getting his MK1 back on the road. At the time I thought how hard should it be to take the loom out of the Seat Cupra and adapt it to the MK1.

Great idea but once I started stripping the Seat it looked like this is not going to be easy.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-wiring-seat-jpg

Then someone had this sitting in their shed so I bought it, a complete wiring loom for a MK1.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-wiring-1-jpg

I even got a wiring diagram to suit.

Should make things nice and easy.

Looks like I'll be adding another MK1 to the back yard.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-new-3-jpg

Couldn't resist and the price was right.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-new-1-jpg

Will go and pick it up in a couple of weeks.

    Please don't tell my wife.

Here's the add on Facebook for the car.

Thinking about moving my shell on
Has Cupra suspension and brakes under it
Seat Cupra gti front calipers and rotors, seat Cupra gti knuckles and hubs, seat Cupra stub axles, hubs, calipers and rotors on the rear
Spax krypton height and dampening coilovers front and rear
    Cupra dash
Was planning on building it as a track car but I have enough track cars and another car I want has come up
    Open to offers
Comes with repair panels and front slam panel plus other mk1 parts

Looks like a good buy, as well as a lot of work, just the right kind of project! Hows the rust in the floors?

I picked it up from Cooma on the weekend – 400 k round trip – stinking hot day, 33C. Drive there, back and unloaded by myself.

I was expecting it to have a lot of rust but there’s hardly any and what rust is there has replacement repair panels. The plan was to cannibalise it to help get the yellow one back on the road then sell off the shell but it's too good to move on.

I'll take out the Spax coilovers (height and compression adjustable - nice) and the Seat Cupra front suspension or I might see how it was modified and use the same parts out of my Cupra.

The firewall has been replaced with a flat panel and the front suspension towers have been raised so much that the shocks rub on the bonnet so making a road registered car out of it isn’t going to be easy and why should I when I have the yellow one for that. Track car? Test shell?

Being an empty shell the possibilities are endless. Adapt the Cupra front subframe to suit like this one?

    78 2-Door Build Thread-mk2-subframe-2-jpg

How about I win Lotto and cut up one of my V6 Boras to put the floor and all mechanicals into the MK1? That would give me a MK1 with 24v V6, AWD and 6 speed manual gbox. I can dream.

Looking for a place to park it at home.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240204_143312_resized-jpg

I found these 2 bolts just sitting on the edge of the trailer. Zoom in on the lower wishbones to see where they came from. I don't know when they fell out but amazingly they stayed on the trailer for the trip home.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240204_143401_resized-jpg

Here's a safety tip. When bolting your boat hoist to a rented trailer don't do it this way.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240204_173433_resized-jpg

Much better. Both bolts are level now.

There's at least another 50mm before the weight of the car will pull out the bolts.

Another set of 16's to add to my wheel collection.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240204_190153_resized-jpg

From this side it almost looks respectable.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240204_190125_resized-jpg

When only the best cable is used to stop the doors opening whilst on the trailer. Probably didn't need it but better safe than sorry when towing a car that's backwards on a trailer.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240204_174750_resized-jpg

Lots of spares too. Floor looks much worse than it actually is.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240204_180131_resized-jpg

This should come in handy if ever I hit a roo with my other MK1.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240204_180027_resized-jpg

I used 3 cans of this stuff to completely spray the body to help prevent rust.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240204_181606_resized-jpg

So now I have 2 donor cars for Scruff in the middle. I really need to pull my finger out and get it back on the road.

    Cheers

Forgive me father for I have sinned.

I have bought another set of wheels.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-wheels-9x16-6-jpg

But would look friggin awesome on the MK1.

16x9's off a BMW E30 so they will have massive offset when on the Golf. Good thing I still have these flares.

Hello! Your yard is looking far too cluttered. You can park this one in my yard for a few years if you like.... 78 2-Door Build Thread-screen-shot-2024-03-07-1-07-24-pm-png

That's the one that I want to build so it looks like Aaron's.

Will probably end up looking more like this.

So........ got the new wheels and they don't fit.

Who knew wheels off an old BMW have a different PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter). Turns out modified old BMW's use later 5 bolt hubs and even though the new wheels have been cut for 4 stud the pcd is different to the Golf's 100 mm. Looks like I'll have to get some adapters made.

Good thing I didn't buy them for the tyres.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240310_182114_resized-jpg

Here's what they look like next to the "old" wheels.

16x9's at the back, 15x8.5 at the front, 15x7.5 on the right.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240310_182614_resized-jpg

8.5 looks perfect on the back, made for a MK1.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240310_184240_resized-jpg

    Different story with the 16x9's.

    No flare.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240310_184736_resized-jpg

With flare, they still stick out.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240310_191101_resized-jpg

    Front is just as bad.

    78 2-Door Build Thread-20240310_192231_resized-jpg

BUT..... I have to do it. The car looks awesome with the 16's and will be even better when I fit the same size tyres that are on the other 16's that I used to have on the MK2.
