Paul I had no idea you bought this! Nice mate, really keen to see how you go.
If you're moving those meshies along, I'd be happy to pick them up hehehe
Getting these soon. I'm hoping they are wide enough to cover the Contras.
The Contras have ET11 and I need to get 4x100 to 5x112 adapters as well so these wheels will stick out a bit. If these flares aren't wide enough I might modify them. Depends on how they look.
If it's too wild these are sitting in my shed but they are only 14x7.
And I've got the 15's off my MK2.

Decisions, decisions.

14x7s would be the go.BIG wheels are in the past.
The rust spots on the roof were very common on German built GLS's.Factory baked enamel over sus primer or moisture in the factory.I'm sure VW know about it but are not telling.Seen it happen to immac GLS's kept under cover.Bit like cracked dashboards they all have them.
Minor problem.
Because this is going to be used a lot on the highways it has to have decent ground clearance.
I'm really tempted to use the 14's but I'd have to run something with a 50 profile like 195x50x14. These have an outside dia of 21.7cm compared to 22.7 for a standard wheel. Even standard these cars have a massive gap between the wheel and the arch so with 14's the gap would be bigger so the car has to be lowered more.
15's with 195x50x15 have the same dia as standard - 22.7cm - but 16's with 195x45x16 are a fraction bigger at 22.9 so I wouldn't have to lower the car as much as the 14's. I know it's only half a centimeter but MK1's have to sit real low to look good so the bigger the diameter the less it has to be lowered.
At the moment it's running 185x60x14's and needs to be lowered another inch all round (2.5cm). With the 16's that would be 2cm and may be only 1.5cm which would give me a bit more ground clearance.
This is running 16's but still has decent ground clearance. Looks spot on.
Call me a young'en, but the lower the better Paul hehe. I'd say 16 is a bit big on. Mk1. However if this were a daily, then you'd have no choice. I think 15s with 50 profile would be perfect!

My mk1 is lowered on JOM coilovers with just a tiny bit of camber, enough to fit my wheels which are 15x7 Autostrada Pirelli Conturato's with 195/50/R15 tyres. They fit well, I get no scraping on speed bumps or anything, just very stiff ride feel from the cheap JOMs.
I'm thinking of going with something with a smaller wall but they look good for now.
If you want an idea of fitment, use this site - Tyrestretch.com that'll give you an indication of how they will look on the wheels.
Here's my current setup.
