Ummmmm im pretty sure most people with a "warm engine" would run a higher octane fuel.

A good tune will have you running the best. Which should have consumption spot on and power at maximum.

Maybe the car is over jetted causing plugs to foul and excessive fuel use.

I can't see how running the best quality commericially available fuel (ie 9 is a bad things. Should give you a better bang cleaner burner. etc, might also be able to run a touch more timing.

I echo woody's sentiments though. Spend the cash, and get them tuned up properly. Take them to a place with a dyno, and a couple old alfas hanging about (They have twin DCOE's as standard ) That should see it run a bit smooth, get better economy (if you're running too rich and fouling plugs atm) and hopefully get a few more neddies though.

You may want to look at other short term goals too, ie cam, electronic ignition and stuff. No point getting it tuned, only to change cam a month later, if you know what I mean?

yeah of course, im changing the cam and lifters at the begining of next week and were going spend a bit of time giving it a good tune when we do that...

i couldnt see how 98 ron would make such a difference, and as you said it gives you longer strokes without the chance of pinging/unburt fuel...

while we are on the topic, does anybody know of a quality tuning place in syd who would be willing and have the know how to fiddle with mixtures?

any thought on this? is 95 Ron the 'best' option?
Told not to run 98 ron? That's complete bull****.

If you are fouling plugs, the carbs are over jetted or the plugs are too cold. If you are running standard heat range plugs, it's just simply too rich. Stick 4 litres of metho in the tank next time you fill it up, or try E10 (same thing). If it runs better, you're too rich.

Ethanol needs a richer AFR, so if you use an ethanol blend with the same jetting the AFR will actually be leaner.

I used to run E10 premium in my Mk1 1.7 11:1 comp, G grind, ported, 44 IDF weber engine religiously. And i'll be doing the same for my 16v. Heaps better stuff.

So wait, if your engine is running a bit/lot richer, you'd advise to use e-10 preeny?

Hmm that explains why theres less smoke when i use e-10.
Sorry to hi-jack thread, but i was about to open a thread on petrol smell, however seeing as its in discusion.
What can cause excessive petrol smell inside the car? Could that be due to over fueling?

Possibly George, could also be due to fumes from the engine bay leaking into the cabin, (through the front) or exhaust getting drawn into the cabin, through under the tailgate. Check your boot seal mate, as well as engine bay seal (rain tray rubber). If you've got a leak, and you're overfuelling, well yea, you'll smell it in the cain pretty clearly.

    Sh** happens.

Sit back, break open a large block of your favorite chocolate, put on a good video and forget about today.

In a few days you'll be laughing about thinking about selling the Golf.

    Cheers

I'd advise running E10 anyway. It slows the charge burn down, gives you more torque, stops detonation.. Etc. It won't make a huge difference if your engine is rich but it will help.

What carbie are you running? If you are running a weber with an open element filter on top and a bigger cam I wouldn't be surprised. At idle They will blow a fuel mist back out of the trumpets. Some of which can woft into the cabin through the vents if your rain tray seal isn't that good. I had trouble with that.
