brought a new carter 5psi fuel pump from VPW today, ive located the external fuel pump on the rear of the car where the spare tyre compartment is. i ran new hoses from the petrol tank to the pump and from the pump to the fuel line feeding the weber. i also inserted multiple fuel filters on the line so it can reduce dirt that access the weber.
    heres some pictures!

    Nice work Steve,

didn't that engine have a mechanical fuel pump attached?
the mech pump is the blob just to the left of the dizzy, has an inlet and outlet pipe.

Thanks! No unfortunately it didn't have a mechanical fuel pump. This motor is out of a later golf which had a electronic fuel pump.
the blob your talking about is a fuel regulator if I'm not wrong?

Firewall panel is a lifesaver. I was lucky and had them on my mk 1's before I bought them.

(please mount the number plate in the centre )

I would of predicted the mk1 firewalls would of been tougher! By the sounds of your mk1s all having the plate it would of been a common problem!
i was also testing the clutch an every time I put my foot down on the clutch it feels like it's not pulling when it is and when i release the clutch and quickly put my foot down it feels like im pushing down on air! That's how easy its pulling. there's basically a few seconds wait until i can put my foot down again. I've also adjusted the cable so there's no slack in the cable, clutch leaver is just below half way up. Does this sound right?

    Time for a little update:
Havnt posted any progress on this mk1 for ages! so I've found some spare time this sunday that passed, so a mate and I tackled the wiring! Converting diesel to petrol!
Here comes the challenge which consists of slicing and dicing!
Okay for starters we mounted the battery tray in the boot and ran 00 BSN cable to the starter motor, connected alternator cable to starter motor and the sensor wire back to dash, we got the lights behind the dash to work and igntion cable to the starter motor, ran fuel pump wire to relay and back to the fuse box and also added a kill switch for the fuel pump, sensor wires connected to gearbox, ran wiers to the distributer, rain power to auto choke on the weber and re-wired all the cables that are running across front which contain front headlights, indercators, horn and wiper pump as all the cable/copper were brittle! We got sensor wires to run to the oil filter, sensor wires to run to the brake cylinder, thermo fan needs to also be wired up and it's basically ready to start!
We also ripped out a fair bit of wires we didn't need! And now engine bay looks much cleaner!!
    Here's some pictures

hey guys im in a prediciment at the moment! ive got the mk1 running and majority of the wiring done and also need to replace the heater fan but have encountered another issue which involves the gearbox! arghhhh nothing ever goes right!
when i drove it around the block the gearbox seems to slips/jolt constantly! when i plant my foot down would anyone know what may be the problem? i know for in fact when i re-filled the gearbox with transmission fluid i pulled off the speedo cable which is the correct place to top up from...
    thanks
    steve

Did you put autotransmission fluid in a manual gearbox?
