So I managed to rip these out of a mk3 today.
Just wondering if I left something behind that I also needed, or if there is anything here that I can scrap.

I remember how it all went together I made sure to take pictures before removing anything. I just didn't grab the long metal bar that runs from the engine bay to under the gearstick and the joint between the short and long selectors... should I of grabbed that too!?!? I haven't been able to find a definitive list of what's needed for the conversion. I probably should of grabbed everything, in hind sight.
Also, where on the gbox is the code stamped for a 5speed?
look on the very bottom of the bell housing, slightly forward, and the closest part to the engine. gearbox code should be stamped there. you can then go online and find which car it came out of and it's ratio's. the first 3 letters are the code
VW transmisssion codes and ratios.
Ericcs with the gold, yet again. Thanks mate. I'll go down to the wrecker on tuesday and report in with what I've found. I'll check the code online while I'm there to see if it's worth getting.. though I suppose any 5speed is an upgrade over the 4speed right?
The best 5 speed would be one out of a MK2 GTI, they are close ratio (low geared) but you're right, any 5 speed is better.
Adding even a tall geared gearbox to a 2.0 motor in a MK1 wouldn't be a problem as the extra torque of the 2.0 would handle the hills without you constantly having to change down. It's when you put a 5 speed box behind a 1.6 that it gets slightly annoying.
I've just replaced my noisy close ratio box in my MK2 with a MK3 box and the difference in gearing is noticable. Around town it's better because the gears last a bit longer before having to change up but on the open road it's worse. I have to change down to 4th on the big hills whenever I want a bit of extra speed like overtaking. Previously the close ratio box had the motor running around 3000 rpm at 100 ks which is a sweet spot on my 2.0 engine - it pulls much harder from 3000 rpm onward. Now it's around 2800 rpm at 100 ks and just out of the powerband which is why I have to change down. Irritating but not the end of the world.
None of those MK3 shifter bits are of much use.
You need the complete setup out of a Cabriolet or at least new 5 speed ball joint links and a lot of patience to adjust it.

Cheers guys. Having spoken to the MissingLinkZ guy, it looks like the 4speed adjustable kit will work but it won't feel very good to shift. Seems the only real option is finding a mk1 cabby being parted....

Is it worth asking the forum if anyone wants this stuff for $10 so I can get my money back :p I assume all mk2/3 had the weighted rod and used this setup >.>
