    5-speed happyness!

    hey golfers

just a little report on the blue smokey bastard car.... i.e. my golf

mollins and i did a gearbox swap yesterday which was hugely successful... ideal diesel box, long ratio 5 speed which im fairly sure has the 0.75 5th gear on 3.89 final drive... does about 2200rpm at 110km/h - I hope for 60mpg on the highway.... time will tell.

inner cv's are terrible, and we swapped them from left to right which made them far worse (oh dear). also changed the clutch.

it took 2 of us a day to do it, which was pretty good really, considering we modded the linkage aswell (cut and weld).

i made a 5-speed gearbox mount by cutting the end from a 4 speed and doing some welding...... and it all fits perfectly! yay!

an immense thanks to mike (mollins) for the help and the gearbox. the car is so very quiet now!

if anyone needs to know how to do the 5 speed mount, its pretty easy, but if you want to know how exactly ask.

How much would you charge to modify a 4 speed mount for me if I supply the mount?

Sounds like you did a good job, well done.

Thumbs up Well done, you guys

My dream is a 1.6 turbo and 5 speed in the mk1 diesel (but my alterego says, "Keep it original").

How do you know you're doing 2200rpm? have you got a tacho fitted? More info, please!

    hi dudes

sorry so slow - had uni everything at the moment......should be doing assignment at the moment...

brackie, the gearbox used to be in mollins 1.8, which we had a tach fitted to, so i know the revs and lengths of each gear pretty well.... i tried to do a tach fitment to the golf last year a bit but never got it fininshed - was just a little bit too hard.

loon - if you want a 5 speed mount, i can make it for you but it'll need to be on a weekend i go home (welding access). i will be home this weekend coming (over fathers day). pm me if you want to discuss price.

5 speeds (long ratio ones at least) seem to be rather scarce, so as to how much they cost, i really couldnt guess. suffice to say that it would be quite a lot.

the thing i dont get is why there arent lots around... surely most gearboxes from mk2's would be ok, and theres LOTS overseas, particularly in the US.... its not hard to get a close ratio 5 speed, why cant we have the stock mk2 boxes aswell?

    I have to agree.
After having slogged it out with four-speeds for many years, the five-speed in the GTI does seem a very worthwhile improvement
A nice box - the ratios are much better set up.

Don't think I've got the new linkage set up properly at the moment though - seems to want to jump out of reverse a bit...

I have lots of 5 speeds, from overseas, but am a bit shy on mounts for em.

I have lots of 4 speed mounts if you fancy making a few Ayden

maybe i could do a production run...

seriously, it may be worth it. one was ok, doing another "one off" is a little pointless though.... if i knew i could make 6 or 10 (and get paid for it) i'd do that for sure.

    pm me Loon,
