Sounds like you have a few things to check before you go too much further:

    > inlet manifold bolts are all tight - make sure you dont have a vacuum leak. Did you use a new manifold gasket? If you can't find anything obvious, but you can get the engine to idle (even if only roughly) you might be able to find the leak by using the following dubious but effective method - I take no responsibility if something bad happens!!! - basically, while its running spray something like WD40 heavily onto potential leak points (like the throttle body assembly, vacuum lines or where the manifold joins the head). If there is a vacuum leak, the wd40 will be sucked in and for a second while the area is 'wet' the engine will probably pick up. There are all sorts of potential dangers ofcourse but its an old mechanics trick and it works well....
    > exhaust manifold/headers bolts all tight?
    > get a timing light and time the engine with the vacuum unplugged but blocked to 8 deg BTDC. Thats roughly correct and will get you in the ball park. There should be a mark on the flywheel... if you can find the TDC mark, just look anticlockwise around the flywheel about 8 degrees and you'll find the timing mark

If you have any vacuum leaks at all (even at the throttle body bushings) you wont be able to time the engine properly.

All new gaskets and tightend all the bolts today but will give that trick a go on the weekend! (with a hose pipe ready at my side lol).

Dont have a timing light but i have got every other mark spot on to the timing specification's and im pretty sure theres no vacuum leaks as i changed most the fittings for new. But i will go over everything again!

This may be a full noob question but which vacuum are you referring to when you say block it! The one going to the dizzy?

    Cheers for the advice

Timing light bought fingers crossed be here next week!

had a look over everything once again double checked all bolts where tightened and vacuum was all hooked up and all looked good from what i could see so loosened the the dizzy cap and turned her over again was struggling to idle with out a small back fire and coming close to stalling, Started to move the dizzy gently to anti clockwise and she just picked up and started to idle around 1000rpm and zero back fire! (from the inlet or back of the engine) as in the vid there are 2 but there coming from the exhaust what i THINK is down to the air-flow sensor not been attached so running rich!!!! mayb wrong as up until around a year ago engines worked by magic!!!!

here's a vid been idling for about 5min at 1000rpm
Vw mk1 golf exhaust sound - YouTube

also oil smells of fuel should i drop it and change?
could this have been from all the flooding prier to her starting and the miss firing?

Any way besides the engine whats doing my head in now small list of cosmetics left to do trim wheel arches as i forgot to roll them, hook middle grill lights up (have no idea where to start) and spray one sill with black stone chip!
Im sure there's more as i wrote on the last page i had finished.......! Fricking idiot i own a mk1 im never going to be finished!!!!!!!

Oxygen sonsor back in and hooked up!
Also think i have massive Vacuum leak coming from the injector o-ring seals "or clearly lack of" as when you flick the throttle you can hear a massive whistle type sound coming from the of the engine and everything else has been triple checked for tightness!

Any one got any for sale????

Well Bit late but been busy with work!
So anyway a MASSIVE THANK YOU has to be said to grant (roccodingo) for helping me get the old girl running intime for my Girlfriends family arriving from uk so we have enough cars to get them about in now! And she would have still been up on jacks had it not been for his help.

So anyways the girls is back on the road and took her for a drive with the top down for the first time in nearly a year what was pretty damn good and drove alot better than i thought she would! needs a wheel alignment and to get 100% need to be put on a dyno to get fuel mixture correct but atm she is running better than she has since i bought her.

Tho i have found a massive oil leak coming from the sensor on top of where the oil filter mounts, The sensor closest to the engine with a blue wire coming off it. also the BAR gauge in the center console is showing very high pressure high as in reads 6 and it only goes up to 5 lol!

Not sure if this is down the the oil sensor i was just talking about?????

Anyway back to the good news i will post a vid of her driving (probably for my own satisfaction) but if any one cares there will be one soon

the oil pressure regulator on the pump might be stuck. That wouldnt be unlikely if the engine was sitting for a long time.

Probably the easiest way to fix it would be to fit a new oil pump, or a known good one at least. You can probably unstick the pump you've got but its a bit of a job to get it all apart as the regulator is contained with a welch plug type arrangement.

You can seal the leak at the sensor with a new copper washer - 3/8 or 10mm I think will work. (The thread is 1/4NPT im pretty sure which is almost exactly M10x1mm, so a 10mm copper washer should fit under it.
