TSR big brake kit for mk1 golf
That's the kit mate.
I remember talking about this problem with Loon ages ago.
I think there would be more merit in adapting the mk2/3 hubs to work well in the mk1 chassis - because then you can use all the easy bigger brake options without anything tricky.
The main difficulty with this is that most of the mk2/3 hubs are for power steering, and have a short steering arm.
I was thinking once upon a time that theres likely an off the shelf tie rod end you can buy that has an offset large enough to counteract the difference in moment arm to the hub somewhat. you could have slight quicker steering and better brakes.
I dunno.
Just reviving an old thread, any more update on running larger brakes on the mk1s, via an OEM option as opposed to buying kits?
Anyone done anything over the years?
On mine I'm fitting 280mm disks off a Seat Cupra with callipers off an old Vauxhall or Opel. It's supposed to be a straight swap with no machining needed or adapter plates.
I think from memory it was a calibra if Im not mistaken?
You are correct. This is my setup...

Callipers and carriers are off a Holden calibra (opel/vauxhall import) v6 or 16v turbo (i cannot remember) and have enough room to accommodate for 288mm discs. Shame vw don't make em that big in a 4 stud.
Here's a pic of the callipers

and the necessary shoulder bolts to mount them (the carriers have a 12mm hole but the mk1 hubs require a M10)

All else that is needed is some G60 corrardo discs.
George, I'll whip a wheel off for you at the next mk1 meet and you can have a squizz, so you'd better get around to organising one ;)
EDIT: You'll need to get some mk4 polo break lines to connect everything up correctly. It's fairly self-explanatory
I have a complete set of front brakes from my Seat Cupra that I am keen to sell if anyone is interested. Near new rotors and painted calipers.Attachment 24924
Jordan that's awesome man, how do they stop? So really its like a vr brake setup size then.
Also, I will whip something up really soon man :D
Bora Sport, what did you do to make that setup work? What size discs mate?
They pull up fantastically well mate. They are a 54mm piston which is the same as a VR6 caliper, and the pad has excellent disc coverage.
Are you seriously considering selling George? Is there another mk1 we don't know about?
