VW: it aint just a car, its a way of life
There are few things more satisfying in life than finding a solution to a problem and implementing it

I know a lot of 8v engines were used in Formula 2 in the late 80's early 90's.
They would build them to rev like crazy and only run for a race meeting then need a strip down. Constant 9k limiter abuse in a 450kg open wheeler is epic win but having to strip down engines after evry race meeting not so win.
Have a chat to this bloke and get him to build you a warm street engine.
Or better still go and see Andrew Robison. He knows his stuff and im sure would be more than happy to help you out....
i don't think it's especially impossible to build high power 8v motors...
mkIIroc in the states pulled 150whp on a counterflow 8v built in his back yard.. standard JH head. i don't know if i trust the figures but they wouldn't be that wildly inaccurate.
240hp even at the fly for an all motor 8v is definitely pushing limits though.

must be run on something other than 98. I'm thinking methanol, C16, AVGAS or something. and even then, I reckon it's pushing the limits.
It'd be a race engine, and definately not streetable. (imo)
most definitely not a street engine... that rocco in the states i'm talking about is a home build, but it's a dedicated drag car. on methanol it puts out like 170ish whp. but i dont think he rebuilds it unless it breaks

240 hp for 5 sec before it goes BANG! agreed great things have been built in back sheds but more bad than good
In this day and age word of mouth pretty much means nothing specially talking power and engines, before posting on any forum with this topic hard evidence is essential. But there is 2 sides to every story and the setup has not be listed as yet is it 2.0l ?? cross flow head?? no one knows, you can make good power numbers from a 8v 1.8 or 2.0 N/A, Turbo or Nitrous depending which path you choose will depend on what outcome. There are people out there with deep pockets and good knowledge but there is also dreamers
I built an 8v 1.8l NA with the works years ago for street use it featured
*0.40" oversize 11:1 compression pistons
*fully balanced bottom end with knife edged crank, ultra light weight flywheel
*schrick 282 degree cam extensive porting, polishing, match ported, 40.5mm inlet valves, 33mm exhaust valves, heavy duty springs, titanium retainers, adjustable cam gear.
*twin 40mm webbers, ported & polished manifold.
*custom extractors 4 into 1 with tuned length calculated to suit modifications, 2 1/2" mandrel exhaust straight through mufflers.
*electronic ignition etc etc the list goes on...
My point being with this engine on the dyno all tuned and carbies jetted by a reputable tuner specialising with webbers it put out shock horror 132whp... or around 160 flywheel hp at 6800rpm
240 hp is possibly acheivable but it would take deep pockets and would not be streetable...
