    Is 240hp good for a 8v mk1?

Hey guys, just met a dude who has been building engines for years, and has a 8v mk1 engine sitting there with heavy duty titainium valves. Worked head and heavy cam, new pistons and its all ready to go. Not sure of other specs but it has a max power potential of 240 pony's. What would that be like compared to a 16v? I know nothing about engines so help me out cheers!

A stock 16v will have around 130-150hp or there abouts depending on the engine.

It would be an absolute rocket! if it is non turbo I couldn't imagine it would be to streetable would have to have an enormous cam!

Would make a great race engine!

    240bhp from an NA 8v???

    not likely mate!

VW motorsport was getting 300bhp from the 16v back in the 90's.

Sorry i just dont believe that figure....

sounds like a pure race motor (running iTB's or massive carbs)
figures sounds very high, but i do not know what race spec 8v's put out. i know the 16v's were 300 and thats with a massive amount of work!

Velly's top tip of the day.....
here is some foor for thought when people throwing engine power figures about,
I had many many dealings with N/A 16v's back in the uk, most top tuners will stuggle to break the 200BHP with a N/A 16v the average output of most valvers is about 180bhp (flywheel)
8v's you tend to see 150-160bhp tops

I tend to get ready to call BS when people start post 200bhp+ NA engines that some guy built in his shed

Holy cow! The gtr is 275HP stock but running 14psi. An 8v with nearly that I would love to see, yes, could be a race built engine, but is it humanly possible to push that out of a na 8v? And I'm still assuming it would be fwd only...? Who has this?

Hold up, no one said it had 240hp. It has a max potential of 240hp, so does prity much any engine, even a stock 8v can make 240hp at a million rpm for a split second. Its like saying a turbo can handle up to 600hp, that doesnt mean its going to make 600hp as soon as you bolt it on.

He didnt indicate if it was turbo or not, or even if it was carby or injected, or dispacement or even what 8v. I read about 8vs making 200hp NA and 250+ turbo.

Find out the actual specs mate and then you will be able to get more help. If it runs more than 150hp at the fly then you will need to start thinking about cluch and gearboxes. Depending on how its built, its prity safe to say any more than 150hp NA carby wont be a reliable daily.

Cheers for the thoughts guys this guy is legit, and a absolute pro, so i trust him when he is quoting power numbers. Just not sure if this engine is for me! Oh and ps. wars have been lost/won because someone underestimated what you can build in a shed
