Thats pretty good work man! The golfs do lag that extra gear, im yet to experience my 5 speed, but i have been told its soooo much better. Also how did you go with the gti calipers etc. Where did you find them, was it hard/ expensive to get?
Love your work!

I got most of my parts from golf loon, evorobin sells coilovers. The GTi calipers can be hard to get. I am hoping to be able to drive it by the end of the week.

Matt, how are you?
Do you have a set of 5 speed linkages that I can bolt in rather than me doing the mod. Does the factory five speed shifter feel better than the modded 4 speed one? Wondering pro's and cons,
cheers
george

I have a MK1 diesel which I love dearly but I must say I have never felt the need to update brakes ,suspension and gearbox. It would be difficult to get it to go fast enough to need more brakes I would have thought and my experience with golfs and passats is that the standard gearing both internal and overall suits the specific engines perfectly. I wonder if the overall gearing with the 5 speed may be a bit high for the little 1.5.
I just put a replacement motor in my golf which I purchased from a chap who bought it as a spare part from VW and only put a couple of thousand kms on it before parking it in a paddock for reasons unknown.Fantastic little engine, smooth as an electric motor when it gets a few revs up. The above mentioned chap I got the engine off bought his golf new in 1980 and it cost more than a Ford LTD at that time. It is a wonder they ever sold any of them (Im glad they did).Incidentally I run mine on Veggie oil (suitably processed of course) and it goes very well on it other than in mid winter when the stuff gets a bit thick.
IT will be interesting to see how the 5speed goes and it is great to see someone putting love into a vastly underrated vehicle.
Regards Dennis.

good to see another brissy mk1 getting around![]()
driving around with reverse 1st 2nd 3rd 4th no fifth still thinks its a 4 speed everything else is **** hot. the bigger clutch did end up slightly fouling the dust cover ( see previous posts ) I knew something wasn't quite right with how the box went on. I had to cut a small piece of out out as the flywheel was larger in diameter. Brakes are spongy I suspect because it needs larger master cylinder. WOW back on wheels and driving after some serious reverse engineering

Sorry to bump this old thread but it has many photos of the work that I did to my MK1. It is with regret that I have decided to sell my golf after six years of dependable service. I no longer have the time or energy to give this car the rebuild it deserves and so I have decided to sell the project. It has many spares and performance mods, the body is still very straight and there is almost zero rust. It has a set of spotlights, a new set of front tires, a new battery, five speed gearbox, big brakes, including big rear rear drums that are not fitted, big clutch coilovers, modified rebuilt CV's, the old photos are fairly accurate and I will have some new ones up as soon as I get photobucket working again. I will also put up a thread in the for sale section. I still have copies of most of the original receipts. Don"t miss this vehicle it is the perfect candidate for a performance restoration. It goes well and the old 1.5 Diesel still runs like a clock. The vehicle is currently unregistered and will be sold as is where is. Asking $2800 firm.
