1979 Mk1 GLE diesel injector woes

    Hey Guys,

My MK1 injector pump is leaking! I have attached a picture I stole from another thread while hunting for answers. It is leaking from the brass fitting in the white box. I have a rebuild kit for the injector pump however is it worth pulling it apart myself or should I rip it out and take it somewhere to get done? Any advise would be great. I am located in Sydney, if anyone is keen to help me out I would be happy to pay, or if anyone knows a good rebuild shop?

    Cheers guys and girls,

    Bill

Diesel must be a dirty word these days

Sorry, but there will be someone with the answer shortly, not usually a lot of traffic on Sunday nights

    G'day Bill.

That fitting is a lock nut, which holds the governor main shaft in place. Theres an o-ring on the shaft which may be leaking. the only way to change it is to disassemble the whole pump, because you have to remove the governor which means taking out the main gear ring.

If you have no experience with injector pumps, its going to be a pretty steep learning curve! I would recommend going to a bosch diesel service place.

I've rebuilt pumps before and its not really difficult, but you need an exploded diagram, a good set of tools and a nice, big, clean workbench.

    Thank you gldgti,

I am not against pulling it apart or the steep learning curve. This is my girlfriends car that her father bought her, great car I just don't know that much about diesels. I have purchased the rebuild gasket/o-ring set having learnt it was going to cost quite a bit to get it done elsewhere, i also have what I believe to be the manual........ I've have a 89 Rover mini so I'm behind enemy lines.

You have told me unfortunately what I didn't want to hear, I was hoping I could access the problem without having to pull the whole pump out. . Okay, are there any massive DO's or DON'TS before I attempt this? Will the mixture/needle/pressure or however this thing works stay the same if I don't change shims etc?

    Thanks again,

    Bill

If you're going to pull it apart, you will need to tool up. If you have the Haynes manual for mk1 diesel golf, that will give you enough information to make tools to hold the injection pump, camshaft etc, and give you the timing belt removal/installation procedure.
The pump is a bit trickier. You'll need a few special tools to pull it apart. I have a few of them but I have also been beaten by those locknuts on the governor spindle before, they always seem obscenely tight.
Happy to lend you special tools if you need.
