2 door swallowtail, nice pic up...
Earlier in the year I got a call from a postman up in moora telling me he had a few golfs for sale, one of them running and registered. after sending me some photos of it sitting in his backyard and giving it a quick check over pedro (type 17) and I decided to make a last minute trip up there in his mk1 and drive the running mk1 back home.
Although the other car wasn't drivable we got to spend most of the day stripping any funky parts it had on it before the owners took it to the tip. So after the 3 and a half hour trip up there and a days mucking about we were on our way back in the dark with two mk1 golfs and another cars worth jammed into the back of them. I think it would have to be the coldest drive I've ever done as the car had no carpet at the time and I'd chosen to wear sport shorts that day.
surprisingly we got both cars home without any issues and managed to drive the white car with an orange bonnet through a police stop in a less than unroadworthy state. i think the police were more interested in the days story than seeing if the car was fit to be on the road.
The car was in a fairly sorry state at first sight but was ratty enough to do whatever I wanted with and not feel guilty. It also had the swallowtail rear panel so decided it was worth saving
some photos of the car once it was home
It wasn't much to look at, the last owners had welded up all the trim and aerial holes, stripped the interior and spraypainted any marks on the body so it was onto stripping it down and off to the painters

argh, I want a 2 door swallowtail so much!
MOAR!
after stripping everything back to the shell the golfy went down to live at the paint shop for a few weeks while steve the painter sorted out the bodywork for me sorting out any rust and welding up the beesting aerial holes
this gave me some time to order new rubbers for the car, sort a full set of glass out, had the plates remade etc and source a few extra peices in the meantime.
after a few weeks I got the word the car was all one colour again, and set about putting it back together down there so i didn't have to trailer it back again.
once the car had a front and rear screen and the two quarter windows in it was driven home, where the rest of the parts were put on. all the rubbers and trim parts were replaced along with the stoneguards wipers badges etc and managed to find a set of side trims and a new clip set aswell (almost, still missing a drivers door trim).
after a while the exterior started looking respectable again

I was lucky enough to be put onto the original owners of the car, who had a bunch of NOS scrapers window channels quarter vent rubbers etc that they sold me, along with a new plastic dash from a south african model golf which with a few brackets fitted in there well and can just be seen in one of these photos, they'd also replaced the headlining when they had owned it so that was one less thing i had to get for the interior I managed to get a new black carpet and luke (volksee) gave me a heater box for her which was much appreciated.
I've hopefully scored some H&R coilovers at a good price so fingers crossed they'll be over before this years DOVW comes up, as for the wheels there are two seperate sets I'm cleaning up in my spare time, but as polishing isn't the most enjoyable thing I keep on putting it off!
the interior is about 70% at the moment, its back to having doorcards and the correct amount of seats and other things golfs should, but would still like to find a different interior when something comes up.
I'll try to upload some more photos of the inside and under the hood over the next few days, the motor has since been cleaned up and is running with a dellorto but not much else has been added in that department
looks sweet Dan, well done
