Earlier in the year I got a call from a postman up in moora telling me he had a few golfs for sale, one of them running and registered. after sending me some photos of it sitting in his backyard and giving it a quick check over pedro (type 17) and I decided to make a last minute trip up there in his mk1 and drive the running mk1 back home.
Although the other car wasn't drivable we got to spend most of the day stripping any funky parts it had on it before the owners took it to the tip. So after the 3 and a half hour trip up there and a days mucking about we were on our way back in the dark with two mk1 golfs and another cars worth jammed into the back of them. I think it would have to be the coldest drive I've ever done as the car had no carpet at the time and I'd chosen to wear sport shorts that day.
surprisingly we got both cars home without any issues and managed to drive the white car with an orange bonnet through a police stop in a less than unroadworthy state. i think the police were more interested in the days story than seeing if the car was fit to be on the road.
The car was in a fairly sorry state at first sight but was ratty enough to do whatever I wanted with and not feel guilty. It also had the swallowtail rear panel so decided it was worth saving
some photos of the car once it was home
It wasn't much to look at, the last owners had welded up all the trim and aerial holes, stripped the interior and spraypainted any marks on the body so it was onto stripping it down and off to the painters
