1.8 JH 5speed conversion (help needed)

    Hey guys,

I've been googling and failing to find any useful guides on the process for doing the 4speed to 5speed conversion.

I have a 1.8 8v JH motor with a diesel gearbox and a clutch that is slipping at 4.5k rpm.

Can anyone make some recommendations for a guide and which gearbox/clutch I should look for to meet these requirements

    a) daily driven
    b) reliable and/or easy to replace
    c) occasional track days

I guess while we're at it, any recommendations for performance upgrades that won't kill reliability?

    sorry to be "that guy"...

I've got a close ratio box in my MK2 which came standard. At 100 ks it's doing 3000 rpm which is just right for the motor. It's got a sweet spot between 3000 and 4500 so overtaking from 100 k's is pretty easy.

Normal performance upgrades are Weber carby and extractors which perk up the engine without being too expensive. Next is a cam and maybe some head work.

    Cheers

    Paul

Basically the same combination that the mk1 cabby came out with. As the JH motor is a cabby motor.

So you're saying that the JH came with a diesel gearbox and a poor clutch?

In any case, do you know where, in victoria, I might be able to find a good close ratio 5speed for the JH and will I retain my stock shift linkages? I was planning to buy a HD clutch kit from techtonicstuning.com, any input on that?

Sorry mate, what I was trying to say was that the JH motor which you have was released in the Mk1 golf convertible.
So your best bet is to fined a wreak and get all the bits you need from it to do the conversion.
In saying this you could also find it in a mk2 8v.

    Only trying to help mate.

You will need the following parts:

    - 5 speed gearbox mount
    - 5 speed shift linkages
    - clutch and flywheel to match the gearbox
    - possibly need some 90mm flanges if the box came with 100mm flanges, or you could switch to 100mm driveshafts

I am fairly sure it had a prang, the passenger side is not straight and the left fender panel has obvious signs of repair. I bought it as is (aesthetically at least).
