I've got a close ratio box in my MK2 which came standard. At 100 ks it's doing 3000 rpm which is just right for the motor. It's got a sweet spot between 3000 and 4500 so overtaking from 100 k's is pretty easy.
Normal performance upgrades are Weber carby and extractors which perk up the engine without being too expensive. Next is a cam and maybe some head work.
