    1.6l starter motor relay #.

    Hey guys,

I need a starter relay for my GLD (converted to 1.6 petrol) with the ceramic bullet style fusebox. Can anyone tell me the ppart number, or better yet, where to get one?

Also while I'm here, I'm going to purchase a Haynes manual, should I get one that suits my engine, or the model of car?? As it's had the engine swap I'm unsure!

    Thanks.

get the manual that suits your engine - body differences will be pretty minor, but your engine is completely different from the old one.
The manual may even include both engines.

What engine do you have? I have plenty of info for the AKL

i have been on there, but really doesn't give me any info on what I need.

I have the 8v 1.6 carbureted engine. Really need to find some more info on this starter relay! I cant find anything anywhere about it.

    There is no starter relay.

The Starter solenoid is fed directly from the ignition switch.

    What's the problem?

Im guessing cause he had a GLD, it still has the GLD wiring, and from what ive seen, the starter wire is spilt near the fusebox and goes into the glowplug relay.

In a petrol wiring loom, it goes from ignition switch into fusebox, then from fusebox to starter.
I dunno if it makes a difference though, it should start wind over

Also, got a positve wire for the coil? pinch it from L15 i think it is on front of the fusebox, its a fused one. Works fine. both my cars where GLD,

    Should still work though.

Either way ignition switch loom hit the fuse box on E17.

On the GLD the solenoid is fed from C10 on the Petrol A10 both of these are commoned up internally .

Power Flow should work like this.

Terminal 30 of Ignition switch is connected to battery, should read 12v permanently.
Terminal 50 of Ignition switch should connect to battery when the key is in the start position.

Terminal 50 has a large red wire with a black trace going to connector E pin 17 at the rear of the fusebox. (E17)

E17 is connected internally in the fuse box to A10 (or perhaps C10)

From there it's another Red/black wire to the solenoid.

Do you have wiring schematics for a '81 GLD? I'll explain the situation better when I get home later on, for now
I need to try track down the schematics.

Buy yourself a Bentley Mk1 Golf manual. They're not cheap but they're money WELL spent it my opinion. I also have a Haynes Mk1 golf Diesel manual which is pretty handy but you shouldn't really need that.
