    020 rebuilders in Melbourne

Anyone have recommendations for 020 box rebuilders in Melbourne. Need to weigh up cost of giving it a go myself vs having an expert weave their magic

To be honest, I haven't had a lot of joy getting 020s rebuilt.

Geoff Hale has some good results from Baker Bros, I think they're in Oakleigh somewhere.

I've got one apart on the bench now. One day I'll figure out how to put it back together.

I'm leaning towards giving it a crack myself. Can't be too hard right?

If you need advice there's a guy on the ClubGTI forum called Hotgolf. He's the gearbox guru.

    Bakers are shock absorber specialists??

Yes, Oakleigh/Huntigdale. Real old school, walk in the door and get cancer type of place, only open in the afternoon, zero marketing, not who you know but what you know (although they know everyone who is anyone in the scene)

Unless you have the tools and complete shim selection I wouldn''t bother doing it yourself if you want a rebuild that will have some degree of lifespan. Yes you can slap them back together if your only wanting a bodge job but to have some kind of trust in the transaxle it needs to be done correctly.

I have done at least 4 now, ( 2 with wavetrac and diff bolt installs ) with assistance from Brian at brokevw.com ( for parts mainly ) as some 020 internal bits are NLA ( 25 mm bore mainshaft bearing for instance for the early series boxes ) 16V trans have a few different parts in them as well...

    Wavetrac install.

Lloyd Davies at Volkswerke used to do a lot of gearboxes, so he has good knowledge about the product.
