    WTF - 7spd DSG

Before I start, I love DSG as a function, I think when its behaving its genuinely a lovely piece of engineering/

As for the 80% of the time its not behaving though....

It had a new clutch pack at 15k due to me complaining to VW that it was shuddering out of first, slipping between 1st - 2nd, 4th -5th, and being generally jerky.

It (sort of) resolved the issues, the gearbox felt close to what it did when I drove it off the lot, yet 4th to 5th takes sometimes up to 2 seconds to shift.. (I drive in Manual mode everywhere).

5k after having new clutches I'm having the exact same issues, shuddering on friction point in 1st, horrible shifts in almost every gear unless I lift off the throttle between shifts (and even sometimes when I do that it hesitates).
All in all its becoming a horrid driving experience..

anybody having better luck than me? I've little faith in taking it back to VW if all they're going to do is put 2 new friction plates in to be burnt to death by the gearbox within another 5k.

only 20k on this car and as much as I love it when it works, highly regretting buying it.

    Halp?

my gf has a 1.4 tsi, and she had the exact same problem with the clutch, they changed it and it hasnt faulted since,

they said that specific models came with the clutch made of some different material which obviously isnt any good.

not sure what you should do though, hopefully someone here has some info!

12,500k's and my clutches were shuddering in low gears when the gearbox was warm (after about 45mins of stop-start city style driving) and the dealership is going to replace the clutches in a week or two. I hope the clutches that they replace the current ones with won't wear out so quickly! Oh well, still love the car to death!

All I can say is welcome to the 7sp DSG. I said it before and I will continue to say it...DRY CLUTCHES SUCK, especially when they are controled by a computer which with its terrible programming can't understand how to deal with a slipping clutch properly and how the friction coefficient decreases as they heat up.

I would say don't give up on VW or DSG's until you have driven the 6sp WET CLUTCH variant. Its how a DSG should operate, and it does it very well - continuously I may add.

As for your problem, remember the new clutches did have a harder compound and as a result if you let the gearbox creep in first (foot of brake and no accelerator) it will shake - really this is the case in most manuals - but you shouldn't creep with these gearboxes anyway.

It also made most of the gear changes harsher - this also has to do with the programming which (again poorly) attempts to reduce slipping the clutch.

What year is your car? 2011?

The mechatronics could also be at fault and need to be replaced. I have seen many different problems with these gearboxes from minor issues to quite serious ones - often regardless of driving style so there is something somwhere (ghost in the machine anyone?) that makes them behave weirdly. I have days where I think I'm going to brake down and other days where it performes so smoothly I would almost think its a torque converter gearbox.

Its a late 2012, bought it in Feb this year.

I've driven the wet clutch dsg in Dad's Audi and it is lush.
Its just so concerning as when I bought the car it felt the same as a wet clutch unit. And the degradation of the gearbox scares me a little.

Anyway, I'll try VW again as I guess my hands are tied in that manner.

Also scared about how much money I might lose when I sell it.

Really I'm waiting until the mechatronics recall and the (apparently) subsequent software update to compliment the hardware.

I would like to point out that my DSG "was" silky smooth until the clutches were replaced at 22,000km. I had the normal clutch shudder and really thought nothing of it. They were replaced and it was fine for about 5000km when it started dropping the clutch and what sounds like it crunching the synchronisers amongst other things. The clutch isn't slipping though...yet.

So I wonder if the finger is to be pointed at the dealers doing the work?

Replaced the clutches at 35k, only a temp fix
Replaced the mechatronics at 47k and had Guy_H's DSG tune installed, much better (although changing gears manually still had a noticeable delay) - but with the tune I found I rarely used manual mode since it was always in the right gear to start off with.
Had mechatronics replaced again recently (66k) which meant I lost the DSG tune (waiting to reload it) - back to shifting manually a lot but the delay is a lot shorter than before.
