Which would you buy ? 06 Polo GTI or Brand New Polo Trendline

Hello Polo lovers.

I've been looking at Polo's now for 6 months and finally came to the decision to take the plunge and buy one. I've got a budget between $15,000 and $19,000.

I'm trying to decide between a 06 GTI with 55,000Km, in great condition for $15,500 or a Brand New Polo trendline - Manual with Comfort Pack for $18,680 drive away.

I've driven both, and like both. The GTI sure goes better but the trendline is brand new.

Any advise, feedback, suggestions and experiences would be really appreciated so I can make a decision in the next few days

Personally I never liked the older model Polo's (styling wise), just didn't do it for me. The new ones on the other hand... well I ordered one at the beginning of the year (which ended up cancelled, although that's a whole other story).

Problem is the 1.4L Trendline is just a pig, when test driving it I was just waiting for the turbo to kick in. It just felt like it was missing something.

OK, the manual 77TSI is pushing $23k (the Trendline is a shade over $20k according to carsales & registered in QLD) so it's over your budget but I I believe it's by far the superior vehicle. I'd be ringing around and seeing just how far you can get below the sticker on something sitting in stock.

Plan B: A second hand 77TSI manual, there is ONE listed in QLD at the moment for ~$21k private sale, 12 months old who might just move down a fraction to scrape in under your budget.

The 77tsi seems to be the sweet spot. Worth the stretch imo.

If I had to pick between the two, it'd be the newer trendline over the older Gti. I was never a fan of the old look either and at 5 years old, with a newer and much more popular Polo range, it's showing its age.

I would try to hold off longer, put your head down make some savings here and there a few trimmings in your social expenditure and go for the 77TSI, fantastic car, nippy, controlled an absolute joy of a car.

Sure there have been a few negatives: Rattles, DSG clunk (Normal in this style of 7 speed box), Massive blind spots (remember its a hatch). But damn i love my car

Being the 6R forum, you will get very little (if any) support for the 9N3 GTi here. I suggest you drive both the cars you asked about as they are quite different (opposite ends of the spectrum in the ranges). If you have a firm budget, I suggest you stick to it rather than be talked up to the 77TSI (which is very nice, IF you can really afford the extra $$).

As for looks, is it THAT important that the 9N3 looks a bit frumpy vs the Golf wannabe look of the 6R? And if you really enjoy driving, the GTi can be tuned up a LOT while the Trendline will basically stay as you bought it.

If you can find a nice 9N3 diesel in your time frame, try that too, especially if it one of the run out Pacific models. You'll be surprised by how well they go.

I was expecting a lot of 9N3 support because to me it's an obvious question - go with the GTI. Even though it's the older car, in terms of quality it'll be far better than a base model 6R and then spend the extra $4000 dollars on tuning and you'll have a car that's as fast as a stock Golf/Scirrocco R...surely it's a no brainer...

I can understand where you're coming from - Used vs New, it's one of those decisions where you'll think "well I can get a brand new car for the same price, so is it worth it?". That's entirely up to you based on what you're after.

I think for you, you're leaning towards the 6R, simply because new is better, but remember if you want performance based on the two choices you have, don't mod a Polo Trendline - stick to the GTI.

I would go the new Polo unless:
- You are willing to get the old polo chipped
- You are willing to buy coilovers and new bushes
- You are willing to spend another $1000 on an intake section, gear linkages, etc

Then, the older GTI is a totaly different car, handles well, is genuinely fast and looks good (well, to some of us).
If you don't want to modify the car, get the 6R, they are a better car off the shelf.

To understand the difference, you'd need to find a forum member in your area, most of us 9N3 owners have our cars chipped, many of us have dropped them, and a few of us have done a little more.

Go the brand new 6r, test drive one and your mind will be made up.

noone and Gambit, the 6R being considered is the Trendline (1.4l naturally aspirated) which is HUGELY less enjoyable to anyone who enjoys driving even moderately fast.

The 9N3 GTi does not need a slather of modifications to be a more enjoyable drive than then 6R Trendline - in stock form, it will massacre it on that front. 9N3 GTi owners on this forum like modding because it is easy, affordable and can make it better in many ways but it not an unpleasant, ill handling, slow car in stock form.

It depends on how the OP views cars
- if it is to be an applicance, 6R Trendline
- if it is to be a toy as well as transport, 9N3 GTi
