Being the 6R forum, you will get very little (if any) support for the 9N3 GTi here. I suggest you drive both the cars you asked about as they are quite different (opposite ends of the spectrum in the ranges). If you have a firm budget, I suggest you stick to it rather than be talked up to the 77TSI (which is very nice, IF you can really afford the extra $$).
As for looks, is it THAT important that the 9N3 looks a bit frumpy vs the Golf wannabe look of the 6R? And if you really enjoy driving, the GTi can be tuned up a LOT while the Trendline will basically stay as you bought it.
If you can find a nice 9N3 diesel in your time frame, try that too, especially if it one of the run out Pacific models. You'll be surprised by how well they go.
